This article contains brief + simple mentions of reproduction, but is SFW.

Botleys are a construct species with the appearance of robotic toys.

Origin

Botleys originate in Hearth where they were created by a currently unknown entity, be it corporate or individual, in 262 RE.

Culture

Botleys are found primarily in Hearth, with some scattered to other Taverne zones and very few spread out to other regions.

They have no particular religious ties or worship demographics of note.

Any “illnesses” that botleys experience manifest in the form of digital viruses or malfunctions, and require repair work from construct specialists. Their manufacturers, however, do not make them impossible to repair without special tools, and most shops can handle a botley repair job just fine.

Botleys value digital data and other forms of art and entertainment highly due to its use as sustenance for their species, and tend to amass hoards of it both on computer hard drives and in physical, tangible forms.

Botleys do not need to sleep and can simply power down temporarily to conserve energy, with either a timer or motion/sound trigger waking them up, but some prefer the softness of a bed.

Botleys typically receive an online education free of charge before being released into the world by their creators but can refuse and choose to set out on their own path without much fuss.

Botleys are adaptable to most living situations so long as they are given adequate connection to the internet and electricity, as well as shelter from weather conditions.

Botleys are not equipped for combat in any way outside of some morphs having plastic claws, and do not hold up well in fights.

Appearance

Botleys consist of rounded, plastic shapes.

Botleys possessing markings are atypical outside of modding, but stickers and decals can be commonly seen as fashion accessories.

Their voices are synthesized and pleasant, often melodic.

Some morphs have paw pads, but not all.

Their tails vary in style and length, and not all botley morphs have them.

Botleys are not constructed with hair, but some do get modifications.

They are typically constructed at a height between 4'0“-5'6”.

Their limb style and quantity vary based on their morph, but all botley are bipedal.

Construction

Botleys do not have skeletons, muscles, nerves, organs, or blood, and are primarily composed of plastic and electronics.

Botleys have screens for faces, with any expressions being animated and stylized.

Botley diets consist of data fed to them either through viewing through their screens, plugged directly into the back of their heads, or direct listening, in the form of music or speeches. Direct connection is the most “nutritious” and versatile way to feed a botley, and has the best effects on their health, providing the content is good for them.

Energy levels vary based on how much data a botley has been fed, along with the quality of the data and how much a botley personally prefers that kind of data.

Botleys typically express by animated facial expressions, wagging their tails and ears, and dancing.

Their ears are typically made of transparent plastic and jointed at the base for wiggling motions.

All botleys have transparent plastic segments with the belly segment containing a core that holds all of their personal data. Should the core be destroyed, the botley would die.

Botleys tend to take on animal behavior from their morph’s inspiration.

Life Cycle/Family Structure

Botleys cannot reproduce and do not have any kind of dimorphism.

Any families formed by botleys are chosen and can take any form chosen by them.

Genetics

Morphs are inspired by different kinds of animals and influence the toy-like appearance of the botley.

The first botley morph designed was the K9 morph.

Botleys are inorganic and completely immune to horror mutation.

Morphs

K9

The k9 morph is inspired by dogs. They are characterized by their screen faces, floppy, translucent, plastic ears, paws, and a short tail. As each botley morph is manufactured alongside appropriately themed accessories, k9 morph botleys can find accessories in the shapes of collars, bones, and other dog toys, such as signal receiving collars or bone-shaped data drives. K9 morph botleys often enjoy being active, and many participate and organized various physical or sporting events, such as agility courses, herding challenges, or standard sports.

J4ws

The j4ws morph is inspired by sharks. They are characterized by their wraparound screen faces, large jaws, pointed, translucent, plastic fins, claws, and a long-finned tail evocative of a fishbone. As each botley morph is manufactured alongside appropriately themed accessories, j4ws morph botleys can find accessories in the shapes of remora-fish, fish bones, and license plates, such as remora-shaped data drives or fishbone antenna. J4ws botleys require more data and sustenance and have more demanding internal systems when compared to other morphs, often requiring their processing to continue running even during their rest period. This means that j4ws morph botleys never truly shut down.

Ch1rp

The ch1rp morph is inspired by penguins and other birds. They are characterized by their screen eye display, plastic beak, wings, feet -taking the form of bird feet, flippers, or talons-, and lack of a tail. As each botley morph is manufactured alongside appropriately themed accessories, ch1rp morph botleys can find accessories in the shapes of seeds, plush prey items, and bird toys, such as seed-shaped data drives or feather-shaped antenna. Ch1rp botleys are manufactured with music production software installed and can produce audio and music within their own heads.

Variants

H0pp3r

The h0pp3r morph is inspired by kangaroos. They are characterized by their screen faces, translucent, pointed, plastic ears, clawed paws, and long, thick tail. As each botley morph is manufactured alongside appropriately themed accessories, h0pp3r morph botleys can find accessories in the shapes of pouches, plush h0pp3rs, and gloves, such as a data drive with a plush h0pp3r casing. H0pp3r morph botleys often enjoy being active but tend to prefer more contact-based sports, especially sparring or brawling events as well as some precision sports, such as fencing. They are careful to avoid injuries and those that feel like sparring is a too intense activity for them, find themselves excelling in track and field events, especially those that involve jumping or vaulting.

Sc4r4b

The sc4r4b morph is inspired by beetles and other bugs. They are characterized by their screen faces, translucent, plastic antennae, plastic wings, lack of a tail, and their four arms which end in clawed hands. As each botley morph is manufactured alongside appropriately themed accessories, sc4r4b morph botleys can find accessories in the shapes of leaves, acorns, other natural items, and smaller bugs, such as a data drive shaped like an acorn, an antenna shaped like a stick. or an input cover shaped like a mite. Sc4r4b botleys components are particularly susceptible to temperature damage and prefer cool, safe places.

M30w

The m30w morph is inspired by cats and other felines. They are characterized by their screen faces, plastic ears, distinct face shape, long tail, and paws with retractable claws. As each botley morph is manufactured alongside appropriately themed accessories, m30w morph botleys can find accessories in the shapes of collars, plush prey items -such as fish, birds, or small mammals-, fish bones, and cat toys, such as a data drive with a plush fish casing or an antenna shaped like a teaser cat toy. M30w botleys tend to be easily distracted by or otherwise attracted to data which is active, flashy, or otherwise extra stimulating. This can manifest itself as a temporary fixation on bright lights, interesting sounds, or rapid movements, though this is often misleading, as the m30w morph botley is focused on the data accrued from the stimuli and not truly the data itself, and will often immediately abandon the activity when sufficient data is collected.
