Arrhythmia: A Story of Judgments

Chapter 1: The Family

A dog and a spider stand in front of a tall cabin on the outskirts of town. An emblem of a broken heart rests above the entrance.

The spider, Arabis, was particularly nervous about this despite Zinnia's efforts all day to ease him in. He was about to meet their family so to speak.

He was being taken home.

Arabis: Are you sure I should be here? I'd rather avoid stirring the pot if I could.

Zinnia: Why would you do that?

Arabis: Fiends like myself have a lot of stigma around them, I do not want to cause trouble.

Zinnia: You're not going to cause any issues, relax.

Zinnia walked up to the door holding Arabis' hand tight. The spider did their best not to pull away.

They knocked on the door with a distinct pattern.

Zinnia: I'm back from the job! I got a lot to talk about, brought someone home with me!

???: Hold up! I'm handling something-

There was a loud crash from inside the cabin.

Zinnia: Are you okay in there?

???: Yeah just-

The door was unlocked and pulled open. A short cat immediately tackled Zinnia with a hug.

???: I heard about what went down! The whole town burned, we thought you were a goner!

Zinnia: Yeah.... I'm amazed I made it out of that at all...

???: Who's this you brought with you?

The cat looked up at Arabis.

Zinnia: New friend of mine I made on my way back. Came very handy more than once. This is Arabis. Arabis, Pitcher. She's a master of bartering so if you need to pick up some goods she has you covered.

The spider gave a small nervous wave. The cat's eyes widened.

Pitcher: You're REAL tall, like an athlete. You wanna come inside? We just finished up with some pastries and mocha.

Arabis: Only if you're certain but that'd be quite lovely...

Pitcher: Really well spoken too!

She leaned toward Zinnia's ear and whispered.

Pitcher: I can see why you like this one.

She turned toward the inside of the cabin and yelled.

Pitcher: Zinnia is back and brought a guest! Everyone on your best behavior!

Another cat with a flaming skull-like head rushed toward the entrance of the place.

???: Oh my god, you're okay! We held out when we heard there were survivors but you're actually here!

Zinnia: You worried about me?

???: We were all worried! Glad to see you're back in one piece though.

Zinnia and the skull-headed cat exchanged a quick hug.

???: So your new friend, I overheard is uh... Arabis right?

Arabis: That would be correct.

???: Lavender. I'm... what would you call me?

Zinnia: Clutch. You've pulled us all through some tough jobs by just being there.

Lavender: I can work with that.

She turns her attention toward Arabis.

Lavender: You look so tense, relax.

Arabis: Relax?

Lavender: You're pretty obviously nervous. I can understand that though...

Pitcher: Seems like the shy type.

Arabis: I was a hermit before any of this so... admittedly I have to say yes to that.

Lavender: Nobody's gonna bite. I mean I know I probably look a little weird and that's not helping my point, but you're going to be fine.

Zinnia: Let's move inside, yeah? Are the other two home?

Pitcher: Rosa is. Heath is still on a job right now.

Zinnia: Sounds about right.

Arabis: There's quite a few of you living here...

Zinnia: I mean yeah. We'll have room for you though if you wanna stick around. We picked up a place that'd accommodate for future members of the team like that.

Arabis: That sounds like so much....

Zinnia: If the others are okay with you, we're good.

Pitcher: It’s been a bit since we've had someone new in our group anyway.

Zinnia leads the spider down toward the living room. A rabbit-esque person with a roachy vibe sits in front of a coffee table organizing money.

Arabis: Hello.
The rabbit looks up.

???: Just wrapping up, brought in some big ones today. Rent is gonna be easy this month. Glad to see you back also, gave us all a scare.

Zinnia: This is Tuberosa, they're our local dueling master and quite the storyteller.

Lavender: Most of them are fake though.

Tuberosa: Why're you roasting me in front of the new guy like this? What'd I do to you?

Lavender: I'm just saying it how it is. Combustible nosebleeds, frequencies that'll cause your brain to implode, the entire Big Summit hunt.

Tuberosa: Okay, I actually got the scars for that last one and I don't appreciate you implying that shit's fake.

Lavender: You fought a bear. A big bear that hates you a lot.

Tuberosa: Big Summit is a bear! People know this! Piece of shit was after my cola. Drinks all your good shit and then counts down your sins in front of you.

Lavender: No, that's some family circus cryptic garbage you're telling people to scare them.

Pitcher: Wait, what kind of bear is Big Summit?

Tuberosa: Kind of got a white hue going on? Like-

Pitcher: Okay but what kind of bear?

Lavender: PLEASE don't humor them....

Pitcher: I'm just comparing details.

Lavender: What's that mean?

Pitcher: You know.

Lavender: Oh my god, did a bear attack you?!

Pitcher: I made it out okay.

Zinnia: Shoot what? Like an actual bear?

Pitcher: Yeah! Like...

Tuberosa: Was it wearing a big red outfit? Had a skull for a shoulder pad?

Lavender: Oh my god shut the fuck up!

Pitcher: Kinda yeah-

Lavender: When did this happen?

Tuberosa: Yeah for real though why didn't you say shit?

Pitcher: Nobody got hurt so it's fine right?

Zinnia: Was it during a job?

Pitcher: Yeah, like two days ago?

Zinnia: It's long gone by now... where was it?

Pitcher: Creek by the North Wanderlust-Solitaire Station checkpoint. Why?

Lavender: Gonna put a report in for the guild to pass around just in case. I don't want anyone running into a bear like that.

Zinnia: See if you can get a bounty up for it. That bear needs to be cleared out.

Pitcher: We can handle that in a bit... I'll be right back actually. You all keep talking.

Pitcher made her way toward the kitchen.

Tuberosa cleared their throat.

Tuberosa: So uh... you got any experience with knighthood at all?

Arabis: Unfortunately no. I do not have any form of expertise in the subject.

Zinnia: He's a pretty good fighter though, could always benefit from more muscle.

Tuberosa: Unfortunately, you gotta go through some training and then a test to get that job though. Think we can set him up as a squire for now while we get everything done though.

Arabis: Would that allow me to work with you?

Lavender: Mmhmm! You can't accept jobs yourself but you're welcome to work with any of us. Once you're accepted in properly by a guild though you're welcome to whatever work you'd like.

Arabis: Will it take long?

Zinnia: Hard to say but I've seen you in action. You can at least pass the physical portion of the exam easily.

The spider nodded.

Arabis: Then I'm willing to do the work.

Pitcher interrupts the group, balancing a giant tray.

Pitcher: Got sweet bread and mocha ready to go! Everyone grab one yeah?

The group quickly scrambled in to grab themselves treats. Zinnia hands Arabis a mug and a piece of bread. The spider smiles in appreciation before having a taste himself.

Zinnia: You did a really good job with these...

Pitcher: Can't just thank me, Rosa here helped me out a ton. Family recipe?

Tuberosa: Mm. Came from my parents.

Lavender: You sure got a lot of those under your belt.

Tuberosa: They run a bakery, kind of just happens. You pick up on some of the good stuff.

Arabis: It's quite wonderful... the chocolate flavor is very comforting.

Pitcher: I'm glad you like it, there's a second batch coming in soon!

Zinnia: That sounds great honestly....

Arabis: Mm... to be honest it feels too good. I've never really had much of a chance for something like this...

Lavender: Don't you worry about that, you're welcome to enjoy things with us.

Tuberosa: Yeah, nobody's judging you or anything like that you know. We're all misfits and bastards.

Pitcher: Misfit maybe, but he seems too nice to be a bastard.

Tuberosa: Give him some time, we'll corrupt him.

Lavender: No!

Zinnia: Can we get him settled in? We're both a little tired and I'm sure he needs a place to rest.

Arabis: That would be very appreciated.

Lavender points over to the staircase.

Lavender: We got a room up there that might be nice and accommodating. Hopefully you won't have to duck to go in.

Zinnia grabbed Arabis' hand.

Zinnia: We'll try not to be gone too long.

Lavender leaned up to Zinnia and whispered.

Lavender: He's cute by the way. If you haven't made a move yet you probably should or someone else will. Though I get the sense he's only got eyes for you right now.

Zinnia sneered. Lavender poked her tongue out.

Lavender: I mean it. This town is filled with people brave enough to flirt with a 8 foot tall beetle.

Zinnia: He's a spider actually but... I'll take your warning.

The two of you walked up the staircase toward the guest room. There was a very basic bed and a few boxes of canned goods there.

Zinnia: You doing okay?

Arabis: A little overwhelmed admittedly but... I think I will be alright.

Zinnia: They all seem to like you, you'll be fine.

Arabis: I know... I'm not used to anything like this.

Zinnia: I'm gonna rest a bit too, I'll be back quickly, yeah?

Arabis nodded. He moved toward the bed and flopped over onto it, making a bit of noise.

The spider sat alone, pondering if this could be a real chance at finding something more than a lonely den in the woods.

  [FEEDBACK] TCP Groups/Clubs
Posted by: skinstealer - 02-08-2021, 10:18 PM - Forum: [SFW] - Replies (4)

been sick in bed the past few days and last night my brain finally decided to start working again and start spitting ideas at me, which lead me to expanding an idea that i've had on the backburner for a while into something we can actually do something with in the nearish future instead of just being something we'd like to do in an eventual (KEY WORD: VERY EVENTUAL AND NOT IN THE NEAR FUTURE) move

moving the TCPdex entries to a database system (instead of doing a lot of shit manually like we have been) has been on our todo list for a while now, and is something that will (ideally) allow us to do a lot more with the dex once we get it going, but it will likely take a good amount of time and resources that we don't have at the current point in time. one of the things we want to add when we have the database set up though, is a proper tagging system that allows people to search for TCP types with more than just category or number as criteria. i've been going through and adding advanced notes to TCP types here and there as a destressing tool (micro-worldbuilding is good for my brain, as it turns out), and a lot of the tags would be based on both the basic dex entries, and the content found in those notes.

for example, we can look at corpse type's entry here:

category: body
groups: undead, spooky
skin: flesh
fluid: fluid
voice: gurgle, drip
home: dark
activity: low activity
social: lonely
diet: rotting

most of these are pretty self explanatory, but one probably sticks out a bit- the "group" tag. it's still straightforward, but the "spooky" one seems pretty subjective, and that's mainly what i get to play with in the now. TCP Groups will be a new form of classification similar to how we group TCP types for bounty boards, with a shared theme between them. these can be anything from an aesthetic (such as cute/spooky/silly), type of being they are (such as cat/pet/undead/carnivore/toy/candy, etc, just breaking down what Kind of TCP they are, especially in reference to other TCP abilities), or sets similar to, as mentioned before, bounty boards (such as zodiacs, holidays, etc). these groups will be ideally listable on the tcpdex eventually via tags, but for now, id like to look into making them into clubs on the forums- little groups where people can see what TCPs they have have on the type list and participate with those TCPs, be it in discussion, roleplay, events, whatever.

as with other community things, i'd like these to be primarily community run with occasional mod intervention/events, which requires participation incentive. as such, i only plan on releasing one club as a test run to start- the spooky club, with 143 TCP types from almost every category (sorry, machines werent apparently spooky enough). i'm hoping that the narrower scope of needing specific TCP types to participate, as well as having a specific vibe/theme will help encourage participation and provide a sort of prompt- though you don't need to make horror-based content to participate in the club itself- all that matters is the TCP type itself!

open to thoughts on this, go wild, be honest, feel free to pitch ideas here and let me know whether you'd participate in this and in what ways.

half out of curiosity, half out of wanting to do some Things with species and want some direction... looking for information on:

your favorite morbit species

and

which morbit species do you think needs the most work

out of our system's currently available species

go wild, feel free to discuss here (but be nice, obviously some of these species are barely more than vague ideas and a single morph and i mean more worked on in the general sense beyond the obvious "yes we need to add more morphs")

Species Additions

Wiki Additions

Character Design Additions

What did we work on in January?

The overhaul and website project have been mostly halted for now due to internal structure issues- we need to rework our plans for how to handle and approach this before going any further, and it’s not likely that we’re going to make any headway on it soon. However, we are going to focus on enriching what we have now, and making our projects that exist on the forums and wiki (as well as the sites themselves) as best as we possibly can for the time being!

Mortis worked on Felid Factor more in January, though less than they wanted to- a lot came up this month and December system-wise, and they’re still trying to get back into it. However, they have begun work on an official soundtrack with Heike as well as getting back into writing updates! Intro updates are currently 7/52 completed, with 2 other updates done as well writing wise. No images are made up yet though, with a lot still up in the air- patrons will be kept up to date on that. Commissions were completed at a steady clip, as was wiki work, though focus on the latter was changed to a new project meant to convey wiki information in a new and exciting way...more information on that in the next section!
Maybequest also came back in January, and has updated consistently since.

A new project has been in the works since December focusing on Rin’s new character, Wilson, though it has gone unnamed so far- it will be a mature, psych horror project in the form of episodic twine games and focusing on sexuality and relationships, released on itch.io for a small fee. Aside from that, Mortis has been focusing on figuring out Morbit roleplay and character enrichment, along with the usual personal work on Petz and 4dopt on the side- now with Second Life being added to the pile of hobbies.

Knux brought back Arcade Session last month, and has been updating it since! He also brought a couple of barebones morphs to the table, expanding the species significantly!

Mraof has been very busy with moving, and is currently in an extended stay hotel while looking for apartments.

Pear started developing the crob fauna species, as well as an unnamed plankton species- more to come on those eventually! She’s still working on making a new Morbit commission price sheet, which will feature all of her options available for species and fauna designs. She also helped with Maybequest anatomy and composition redlines, assisting Rin significantly.

Zenthis did 3 TCP designs, and worked more on their species, which they showed off in the patreon chat.

Ari updated Prismic Sanctum four times in January, as well as getting the initial species design done for the volare, a new addition to the Morbit canon! They also got a few new character designs done up by Rin and Twinsharks, both of which have art posted in the Patron Chat on Discord. There were also a few character art pieces done by various folks for their projects, all of which are in the patron chat.

Comorant has Updated several projects including the main Masa con Papas comic, Crankshaft Rafflesian's seasonal arc, Dopple Effect, and has begun a project in fleshing out the visual aspect of various regions, starting with precipice. There were also a couple of Crankshaft related one-shots released.

The Winds updated Waterlogged and Hypnagogia a few times, and began internal development on a late future project. Unfortunately, they had a pain flare for two weeks, which is why they haven’t been able to update as frequently. Waterlogged is still open to suggestions, though!

As for Molasses...

What are we working on in February?

The bounty boards (both species and TCPdex) are still up and running, monthly raffles and sales are up. As mentioned, the overhaul plan has been mostly halted for now in terms of website work, but we will be working on fixing up the forums and wiki a bit here and there. It’s hard to say just how much will be done and in what ways as of right now, as everyone is dealing with life matters and their own individual project work, but we are doing our best to figure out what would be best for the community and are absolutely open to input on what you think our community needs for growth and making it the best it can be.

In February, Mortis plans on keeping up more of the same schedule- Felid Factor, commissions, Maybequest, wiki work, roleplay/character enrichment, the Wilson project, and personal work. Felid Factor will still get regular soundtrack and writing work, with a hopeful output of one track a week and two written updates a week. Commissions are still done on weekends when possible, and Maybequest will still update weekly provided delays don’t happen (which, as always, they might.) As for wiki work mentioned earlier, a new project will be coming out soon that will introduce wiki information in a new, in-universe way. Information on the project can’t be revealed too much yet, but we think you’ll really like it, and the new character here to show you information about the exciting world of Morbit. The Wilson project is in the middle of being written, and Mortis doesn’t have an estimate on when the first episode will be released, but they’re hoping for late March at latest- subject to change, of course.

Knux is planning on doing more of the same, as well as work on the TCPdex.

Pear is working on a color and height reference page for several characters, which Lucy has been helping her with design-wise. In addition, the two of them have been working heavily on character development for their projects!

Zenthis’s unreleased species should be completed this month, and they also intend on returning to Egress updates.

For February, Ari is going to continue with Prismic Sanctum, and is also hoping to get a major project update out as well (ideally PK or Tethered, but we’ll see). They are also working on a thing with Como, and hope to get that out this month. They have a potential new interactive project in the works, but it requires a lot of planning, so they might get something out for it in February, but We’ll See. They might see about giving volare their own species page on the forums, as well as some other fun surprises! They’re dealing with some real garbage in their personal life right now in the background, so they can’t really make any promises about consistency, but they’re really hoping to push through things to increase content output in February.

In February for Comorant, there's a plan to release a couple of collaborative one shots, as well as continuing to update comics with a Dopple Effect and Masa con Papas update planned for the first week.

Community Involvement

This month, we’re discontinuing the team worldbuilding threads- they were a lot of fun, but gathering the team together was a bit stressful, and difficult to do! We’re going to try to have people run their own individual Q&As both on forums and on Discord as they want to, so keep an eye out!

We’re still sifting through the recent RP/character enrichment feedback thread, and working on results from that, so we’re not going to start up another topic on that either. Thanks for bearing with us on that front!

Thank you all for supporting us, and we hope you have a nice February!

[MONTHLY WORLDBUILDING RAFFLE] FEBRUARY 2021- MORTIS
Posted by: skinstealer - 02-02-2021, 01:40 AM - Forum: [MORBIT RAFFLE HOUSE] - Replies (6)

welcome to the february worldbuilding raffles run by us, mortis! other team members will be possibly running their own raffles as well, but this one's ours. every month we'll be trying to let you, the community, contribute to our canon via raffling off TCP type and species morph additions based on a monthly theme. these themes will line up with sales for commissions in the following month as well, giving plenty of opportunity for people to add whatever doesn't get in at a highly discounted price.

rules
  • follow the theme as best you can- feel free to get weird with interpreting it, but the themes are there to help guide things and in some cases, limit things to what the artists Want To Do for this month
  • no NSFW/harmful suggestions
  • you Can second/upvote suggestions to weight them higher in the raffle if you like them! this also means you can suggest the same TCP type multiple times if you like.
  • 5 votes for TCP type additions, 1 vote for species morph additions
  • keep your TCP type additions to one noun per vote, and your species morph additions to a word/phrase plus reference images AT MOST. please do not draw or write out a full concept or anything like that! it's meant to be a suggestion!!
  • while we are often too busy to work on extending canon like this in our free time/for fun, any suggestions presented here are considered relinquished to us for potential use down the line, and have a nonzero chance of being added to canon. the only guaranteed way of getting these suggestions in is through commissioning, however, and please do not heckle us about making your suggestions happen on our own time- we do not owe anyone that, and this clause is mainly here in the case of something really resonating with us.
  • feel free to make multiple posts if you can't come up with all of your votes in one go!

with all that in mind, your theme for the month is...

SPECIES MORPH/VARIANTS THEME: ANY SPECIES ALLOWED, PLANT THEME
TCP THEME: NATURE TYPES
suggest away! this raffle will be over on the 25th of january!

  [TCP] Advanced TCPdex Notes Requests
Posted by: skinstealer - 02-01-2021, 11:13 PM - Forum: [DISCUSSION] - Replies (60)

alrighty here goes

here you can request advanced TCPdex notes for a type of your choice- ive got a lot to do and i want to get to them all so i figure that people can request which ones they want to see done so that people can get info they want for say, roleplay or character development more quickly

my only rules are that you check in the dex whether it's been filled out already before requesting, only request one at a time, and wait for your request to be filled before getting another one queued up. these aren't going to be done on a schedule, they may not even be done in order, and i may skip around and just do them as warmups whenever. be patient, be nice to me, wait your turn, etc

so yeah, go ahead, let's do this

my shunt is hurting me and i need a pickmeup and this challenge seems fun, lets do it

1st comment: species (include type/morph/variant, if type, pick one. if picking a concept, pick variant and motif, but not complexity. no gods allowed)
2nd comment: body type (can be vague like tall/short/thin/fat/etc- ignore if TCP, skip to color palette)
3rd comment: color palette
4th comment: aesthetic
5th comment: mutation/modification level
6th comment: zone
7th comment: feature 1
8th comment: feature 2
9th comment: feature 3

result will be...im not sure maybe ill auction it off or something if i dont vibe with it personally and keep it as a canon character? we'll see

rules: don't give me a fucking car or something i'll hate drawing, let's do just my species for right now but if i do this again i am open to doing other peoples' species
be nice
don't post more than twice and dont post twice in a row
have fun
