My name is Rugose.

Hopefully, you're reading this in a little informational pamphlet you were given before attending my daytime talk show about how I became the richest and most famous explorer ever following my groundbreaking research into a local anomaly called the Well, but it's just as likely you found this notebook on the ground somewhere right next to my rotting corpse.

Either way, hi! Glad to have an audience.

In case you need catching up on who I am and what I'm doing down here, I'm Rugose. I'm a Tropius, I go by she/her pronouns, I'm 58 but I barely look a day over 40, I like long walks on the beach, yadda yadda yadda. More importantly, I'm a long-standing and hopefully well-respected member of the Unova Exploration Guild. We go where no one else has gone yet and make maps and such so everyone else can do their jobs easier, and stay away from any dangerous places. Glamorous! Except we've pretty much covered the entire continent, so there's not a lot for us to really do anymore. Aside from a few really dangerous places that no one wants to stick their nose in, we've basically seen all there is to see around here, and as a result, our funding has been severely cut and most of our staff has had to find other jobs or go into early retirement. I was offered a pretty generous retirement package myself, given my services, but I'm not really fond of the idea of growing old in a rocking chair watching daytime television. So instead, I'm diving headfirst into one of those aforementioned really dangerous places that no one wants to stick their nose in!

Now that might sound crazy to you, dear reader, but in all honesty, I'm pretty much perfect for the job. I can grow my own berries on my body as long as I have sun, water, and seeds- so with a little time to rest, I can heal pretty much any injury entirely on my own, with hardly any need for medical supplies. I've kept entire expedition parties alive and fed for weeks, even after a particularly accident-prone colleague of mine tripped and dropped all our rations off the side of a cliff. I've packed plenty of water, as well as a reusable bottle with a Suicune™ filter in it, so if I happen to come across a lake while I'm down here, I can refill my supply. I've got a belt lined with pouches full of berry seeds, so I have access to every kind of berry one can think of, and while I'm not one of those fancy professional combat types, I can certainly hold my own in a scuffle!

The place I'm heading into is called the Well. It's earned a reputation amongst the locals for being extremely dangerous, and for people who enter it generally not leaving it again. There's only vague accounts of what's actually in there- at least, until I'm through with it. At the top of the Well is a 50-foot disc in the middle of the ground with some ancient-looking carvings on it. There's symbols all along the edge in some unknown language, and a depiction of a dragon-looking thing caught in the center of a whirlwind. Or maybe it's causing the whirlwind? Don't ask me, cultural archaeology isn't really my field. I just find the stuff, it's someone else's job to analyze it under a microscope all day long. Anyway, on one edge of the disc is a small staircase- well, small for a Pokemon my size, anyway- leading down into a circular room the same size as and directly beneath the disc itself.

And boy, is it weird! No one's ever seen anything like it. As respectable scientists, we don't like to use the word "magic" very often. But there's really no other explanation for why the room looks and acts the way it does. In every direction- including up- a vast landscape is visible, one that's noticeably different from the actual landscape the disc is placed in. It's a sort of gentle plains, with old-looking cobblestone roads stretching off in various directions towards equally old-looking buildings. No idea what they are or what's in them, though, as the physical space one can actually walk in is still limited to the actual size of the room. The walls and ceiling are faintly visible while allowing a perfect view of the landscape beyond, and almost resemble some kind of crystal in their transparent state. There's a nice breeze coming from either the south or the north- I have no way of knowing since the sun in this room doesn't move and doesn't seem to correspond to the location of the actual sun outside, and I can't tell if it's rising or setting- and the grass beneath my feet is clean and healthy.

There's a staircase directly opposite the one leading to the top of the disc, and that one leads down into another room identical to the previous one, and another staircase on the opposite side of that room. According to the locals, these rooms just keep going down, each stacked on top of the previous one, deeper and deeper underground. Each one supposedly has a different environment inside, too- although I've only properly explored the first room as I write this. No one knows exactly how deep the Well goes, and I intend to be the first to find out- or at least gather a good amount of information about it! Of course, if it were as easy as just walking down a bunch of stairs, someone would have done it already, and this place definitely wouldn't be considered dangerous.

These rooms are inhabited by creatures the locals call "phantoms". Again, a bit whimsical for my taste, but the name seems accurate! These creatures tend to resemble Pokemon, but will attack anyone who approaches them and don't seem to respond to any form of communication. They also don't seem to be alive- at least, not in the traditional sense- as they'll sort of dissipate into a smoky substance when knocked unconscious. They come back when you're not looking, too! If you go down into the room below the disc, beat up the phantoms inside, leave the room, and then come back again, a new phantom will show up. Usually it's a different species of Pokemon than the previous one, but not always. It's unclear whether it's the same handful of phantoms spontaneously regenerating themselves when no one is looking, or a fresh batch that got spawned in, but there's always a new one in there if you leave and come back. They also don't seem to pay any attention to you if you enter a room from the bottom going up- almost as if they want you to leave. Spooky.

The first room had about a dozen Phantoms in it, mostly Flying- and Bug-type Pokemon. I think there was a shiny Shroomish in there, too. Interesting that Phantoms seem to have color variation the same way real Pokemon do. Anyway, all the Phantoms were fairly small, so they all went down pretty easily after a good smack or two. Some of the bites they left on me were pretty painful, though. I've got some leaves covering my wounds, and there's a Sitrus berry ripening on my neck as I write, so I'll be right as rain in a half hour or so.

One pair of Phantoms in particular stood out to me as being a bit different than the others- a Chikorita and a Hoothoot. They seemed more coordinated, and when I'd wounded the Chikorita, the Hoothoot flew in to defend it. Of course, it only took one well-placed backhand to smack that silly bird out of the sky, but the teamwork the two of them had was interesting. I'd initially assumed that these creatures were incapable of understanding speech, but if they're intelligent enough to coordinate their attacks...? Why do they want to keep us out of here so badly? What are they protecting?

Only time, hard work, and a little elbow grease will tell!

one of our biggest special interests we are trying to get back to talking about more is the beautiful world of pokemon randomizers. they are potent for bonding with unique, special pokemon, and varying up playthroughs from the usual fare. however- there are a lot of options out there, and we've found that people we know don't really know where to start. thankfully we've been doing this for like, 15 years, so let's break it down.

disclaimer: WE HAVE ONLY PLAYED THROUGH GEN 5 AT LATEST. other randomizers for 3DS onward do exist, but they're not our wheelhouse and we won't be able to answer like, any fucking questions on that unless we do it ourselves eventually. questions are welcome though, as well as sharing your own discussions, tips, comments, questions, etcetera!

OUR PERSONAL PLAYSTYLE RECOMMENDATIONS

okay, so randomizers have. a lot going on- but there's consistencies between them, and we have opinions on what things are easier, harder, more fun, more of a sicko option, etc. these are PERSONAL TAKES. you do whatever you want. different people enjoy different randomizers, and the great news is that these are customizable as shit, allowing you to experiment and find a playstyle that suits your needs.

first of, and maybe most importantly, encounter settings. these affect where you find pokemon, what restrictions encounter randomization will have, types, basically everything. for us personally, we want to have as many options as possible...but have done multiple approaches to this, and developed pretty strong opinions.

one of the main things you'll be setting is what stage and BST you'll be encountering in different areas. we are freaks who enjoy throwing everything into the soup pot and making it so mewtwos can show up in the first route. i don't know if i recommend this for first time players, or at least people who would be frustrated with their asses getting inevitably beat when a tyranitar punts their jigglypuff starter. on the other hand, getting something like a metagross for a starter feels really cool.....with the tradeoff of usually getting a dogshit learnset level-wise.

consistent options for encounter randomization tend to lean into the following categories:

location 1 to 1- if there's an encounter slot in a location- say, a route, a town, a cave, etc- it will be replaced with another mon. pikachu -> slowpoke, etc. these can also show up on other maps for different location spots, and are ideal if you want to make areas nice and varied.

global family to family- one we havent used, but see tons of appeal in. evolutionary lines get swapped with each other- consistently across the map, no less. example: anywhere you see any members of the pichu -> pikachu -> raichu line, they will be replaced with equivalent members of a different pokemon line. if i'm reading this one correctly, that means that you'll have the added benefit of earlier areas still having unevolved pokemon....very cool! applies to the whole map as stated, so that's neat for imagining different pockets of pokemon families...

catch em all- our personal favorite. ohhhh we love catch em all mode. this one is pretty straightforward. catch em all mode will allow every pokemon in the dex to show up AT MINIMUM in one location, leading to dex completion being possible if you're really willing to root around sicko style. i do not do that, but i really enjoy the aspect of "anything can show up anywhere!" and knowing that somewhere, somehow, your favorites are out there. makes hunting for them fucking awesome, especially when you actually run into them.

similar strength- if you're doing your first randomizer, yooooou might want to do this. this makes sure that early game mons cant curbstomp your ass (mostly) and that lategame mons will actually be a challenge. this...does have consequences, namely in charge of limiting variety in some ways....but i'll be honest, you're going to be seeing so many of these fuckers that if you don't want to go clown mode about it, it's solid.

some patchers will let you keep types the same, or a type theme- so like, a fishing area will have fish, and a place will have its electric types swapped with electric types. that's really cool! i want to try that sometime.

apparently the universal randomizer version that exists now lets you check off catch em all and similar strength versus a separate option, allowing you to combine them with location/global randomization? fucking awesome.

personally, we make the wild encounters varied as shit, and keep starters to first stage pokemon with evolutions if possible. HOWEVER: I DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING PSEUDOS OR ANYTTHING THAT STARTS AT LEVEL 1-5 WITH A SHIT ASS MOVE LIKE SPLASH OR WRAP IF YOU HAVE KEPT MOVESETS THE SAME when you actually get to starter selection, because you will hate yourself and have the worst early game of your life. please. please learn from us and the file we have a lil dratini on. it was fucking miserable.

if you want to not slog through early game in general, are playing with weird movesets, and your randomizer allows- just set it so that your starter starts with four moves. it is so, so easy to roll garbage moves in early game, and switch training is a slog without things like rare candies and EXP all. we do recommend that also for those who don't enjoy grinding. emulators also have speed control- for grinding, use it. you will want cool mons and to see what they become since they're special to You and Your Playthrough, which means that hauling up vibravas up a mountain (from experience) will be a nightmare otherwise. do whatever it fucking takes to minimize potential suffering- even professional nuzlockers lock and load rare candies into their files along with level caps to focus on what gameplay really matters to them.

one of our biggest special interests we are trying to get back to talking about more is the beautiful world of pokemon randomizers. they are potent for bonding with unique, special pokemon, and varying up playthroughs from the usual fare. however- there are a lot of options out there, and we've found that people we know don't really know where to start. thankfully we've been doing this for like, 15 years, so let's break it down.

disclaimer: WE HAVE ONLY PLAYED THROUGH GEN 5 AT LATEST. other randomizers for 3DS onward do exist, but they're not our wheelhouse and we won't be able to answer like, any fucking questions on that unless we do it ourselves eventually. questions are welcome though, as well as sharing your own discussions, tips, comments, questions, etcetera!

HOWEVER: I DO NOT RECOMMEND TAKING PSEUDOS OR ANYTTHING THAT STARTS AT LEVEL 1-5 WITH A SHIT ASS MOVE LIKE SPLASH OR WRAP IF YOU HAVE KEPT MOVESETS THE SAME when you actually get to starter selection, because you will hate yourself and have the worst early game of your life. please. please learn from us and the file we have a lil dratini on. it was fucking miserable.

if you want to not slog through early game in general, are playing with weird movesets, and your randomizer allows- just set it so that your starter starts with four moves. it is so, so easy to roll garbage moves in early game, and switch training is a slog without things like rare candies and EXP all. we do recommend that also for those who don't enjoy grinding. emulators also have speed control- for grinding, use it. you will want cool mons and to see what they become since they're special to You and Your Playthrough, which means that hauling up vibravas up a mountain (from experience) will be a nightmare otherwise. do whatever it fucking takes to minimize potential suffering- even professional nuzlockers lock and load rare candies into their files along with level caps to focus on what gameplay really matters to them.

stats and moves are...vital to defining your experience. if you're wanting a normal, predicttable ride that allows you easy strategizing and a lovely vanilla-esque time aside from random encounters...just leave that shit the same. you can do a lot of garbage to the actual data of a pokemon, and the more you change, the more volatile and hard to keep up with your run will be.
sanqui's red randomizer- ive only done a bit with this, but it's real good. it adds a shitload more mons to the potential pool from other generations, and they have in-style sprites that are so weird and cute. i'd like to run this for real sometime. lacks color randomization, but has music, overworld sprite, and trainer class randomization- which is really cute and good for those looking to worldbuild different areas/variants on areas. what if viridian forest was spooky? that's what ours ended up as with the goddamn lavender town theme.

archipelago randomizers have the unique quality of being a multiplayer experience- i think people should try this at leastt once if they're a randomizer fan and can manage to set up a server/get a group together, because this shit is insane. not only is archipelago a fascinating way to play any game, and people do not have to be playing pokemon themselves to participate, but the randomizers are very granular, and fucking fantastic for customizing a gameplay experience. i've done both the blue and emerald ones, and they rule. do you want to play pokemon while your friend plays fucking dark souls? or tetris? noita? and have that affect each other? yeah go wild go stupid. emerald also has the benefit of being able to trade mons between you and other players in your group, which is so, so awesome. highly recommend if you want to get weird gameplay-wise. lacks palette randomizers natively, but we were able to add an additional color patch on top of ours and it looked great

GBAXG seems to be doing wild map shit, which is something we have zero experience in but have seen friends enjoy the hell out of in other, non-pokemon games. i think this could be really good for narrative playthroughs about different adventures...
THE ONE I CAN'T RECOMMMEND
infinite fusion kuray was one of our go-to randomizers for like, a solid year, both because infinite fusion has so many beautiful fan-contributed designs, easy to understand mechanics, and one of the best custom shiny systems i've ever seen. howeeeeever, the main dev of infinite fusion turned out kind of fucking insane, and the dev of kuray isnt much better. plus, it's discord locked last time i checked, which is annoying on principle. as much as this was our favorite for a solid chunk of our life and we still love the mons we got and want to make them OCs, i cannot recommend this one due to not only the psychic damage involved with the creators, but....also the boycott by the artists who contributed. it just feels wrong.

Today is the day you graduate the prestigious Tapestry Community College, becoming a licensed battler and being eligible for official party work.

....at least, that's all the red tape involved. Frankly, you didn't think you needed a degree for this. You probably don't. You're good- good enough where you flew through the courses above your peers. Lots of people battle without licenses or degrees, because all that matters is if you can knock the other guy down. People paying don't care about that much.

Your instructors warned you this isn't going to be how it works in the real world. If you want official recognition and higher positions in battling career paths, you needed to go for the League, and to do that, you needed paperwork. Be it a degree, a signoff by some kind of mentor, whatever...this was your best option. The college was free to locals and close to home.

Next door, even.

You could do without the convenience during spring break, but at least you weren't paying for dorm space or sleeping outside. Everyone told you outright- you're lucky to have these opportunities. Lucky to be born a type variant, to have such...interesting formative experiences-

None of that matters to you.

All that counts is getting to the top. Anything beyond that is an obstacle.

You don't know her- you've never even heard of her. She got lucky in some ways. Not as obvious as what you got saddled with. That kind of stealth can get you far.

She holds out a goopy hand, looking up at you with disdain.

SLIPPER: ...do you really have to float like that?
Your feet hover an inch off the ground, a fun little perk from...events, years ago. You hadn't been born a flying type, a bog standard electabuzz raised by bog standard parents, up until the day where you were changed.

You settle for raising your brows at her, hair-like antennae bobbing as you tilt your head.

Neither of you can figure the other out. She's stealthy, you're...obvious, but not in a way that makes any sense. You've deviated severely from "electabuzz", but how? Why? You're pink, for god's sake, you float, and have these weird markings-

You stop musing on your opponent's confusion as a whistle blows.

There's quite a crowd today. You're sure you've irritated some of them plenty. People don't exactly root for you for your personality- or perceived lack thereof. Even so, they don't seem to be rooting for Slipper all that much either, the audience devoid of cheering or clapping as your instructor prepares the countdown.

You circle each other.

You still can't get a read on her visually.

Grimer. Grimer. Not a poison type, could still have poison moves. No signs of physical alteration that'd indicate what she's working with, either. Frustrating.

You don't like uncharted territory.

From the worsening grimace on her face, neither does she.

Despite your training, you had only managed to obtain registration for two moves. Plenty of useful skills like grappling, dodging, tanking things, but those weren't moves. Even the other effects of your encounter with the beyond were too difficult to control and classify within the local database.

It happened with type variants plenty, sure, but being a bit of a classification mystery beyond the norm frustrated you to no end. You hated begging for anything, let alone bowing to authority period, but to even get these two techniques declared legal for regulation battles took so much more effort than anyone else has to deal with.

....however, it did come with one very, very important advantage.

You're faster to reach the center of the arena, granting you the first turn. She doesn't see the first TWINEEDLE coming- and how could she? You rush her down, seeing her eyes widen as your hands crackle with blue arcs. An electric attack, surely-!

The energy solidifies, snapping into spike-like shapes on your palms. The first slap lands on the side of her head, the entire sludge mass splattering against it and losing form for a moment.

She manages to reel back just enough to avoid another hard hit, but not hard enough. You land the strike on her shoulder, the impact sending a ripple through her body.

You lunge back, getting some distance. Observing your opponent.
She vomits, the crowd wincing and gagging. You could have charged at her again, but you know the rules. Blow for a blow. Let her struggle, all according to regulations.
Another miss. She takes a needle pulse to the neck and goes down.
You stand over her panting body, the audience actually managing to applaud.

You suppose you underestimated the intrigue of a complete shutdown. Even though you can see that they're disappointed, that they were expecting more- there certainly was a crack in the ground, sealing up as the arena reverted to its original state. A fissure at graduation was certainly new.

You watch as Frills comes in and examines her injuries- Slipper managing to sit up enough to take a pecha vitamin and deep breathe as the energy arcs peter out.
Ugh.

The ceremony itself is negligible. You don't think about too much while having to walk across the stage, and no one claps for you. Your parents were at work, and you already had your things packed to head out immediately. Most of the people here, locals anyway, would return home and have a wonderful dinner with their families to commemorate the event. Maybe even go out for pizza. Very common here.

You had a sandwich in your bag that'd be lukewarm. Good enough.

You haul your bag over your shoulder, a small but familiar mon trailing after you as you pass through the door.

....at least you made someone happy today.

The hike up to the community center isn't a problem for you, hovering all the while. It'd been so long since your feet had touched the ground that you don't even think about it much. You've had to explain to people a couple times that you actually couldn't touch the ground without a significant amount of effort, and decided it'd be much easier on your psyche to train yourself into not caring.

Or, at least try.

It's a standard center, though lacking the built-in drugstore more up-to-date cities feature. Even the healing stations were rather sparse, more a place to do your own first aid than get any help. Self-serve. Yippee.

You're untouched, though. You're here for a different reason.

As much as you'd like to go it alone on your climb, you're not stupid. You have a grand total of two moves, and while they help you get the jump on people, they're not very...good. Slipper having a fissure up her sleeve was far more intimidating, and a reminder that nonstandard mons would be likely packing serious firepower. Pallet was considered a nowhere town with little training resources, despite its proximity to the League- but these rural spots didn't get jack shit for funding. No heroes, no champions.

People would probably see you as one. A hometown defender.

As if you had anything to protect here.

You head to the matchmaking room.

Only one room- pathetic, really. Sometimes people came from the nearby areas to sneer, poke fun at those who have this and nothing else. In a sense, you wish you had made any friends in your courses...or at least had Craggy graduate. He was annoying, sure, but at least he could tolerate you, and vice versa. Would it last under the pressure of league greatness? No, but it'd help on the way.

But no. You had to do your favorite activity in the whole world, now.

Talking.

To strangers.

Eugh.

It's so easy for the others. They just pair up, gauging each other's skills, maybe showing their moveset registration. You feel more and more self conscious as people flash three, four cards each-

Your two miserable move cards feel like terrible weights in your jacket pocket.
You want to leave.

You watch as Frills comes in and examines her injuries- Slipper managing to sit up enough to take a pecha vitamin and deep breathe as the energy arcs peter out.

CRAGGY: Hey!
CRAGGY: Hey, HEY!

You glance down.
The diglett that stands there is wrapped in his usual bandana poncho, the vague silhouette of hands on his hips.

CRAGGY: Just gonna leave without saying goodbye?!
CRAGGY: That fight was a washout, man!
CRAGGY: Besides, you've probably got a target on your head now.
There's an awkward silence between the two of you. He's not good at handling you socially, as much as he tries.

CRAGGY: Look, watch out out there.
CRAGGY: If you're not careful, you'll get in over your head.
STRETCH: I'll be fine.
CRAGGY: ...alright.

He mutters something under his breath, starting to walk away.

....at least you made someone happy today.

You want to leave badly.

....to the top.

You need to-

Plushes will also be made of each fully evolved character as we go, or at least to a point that feels correct for the story- just as a fun bonus thing that will let us improve our patterning skills and give funny bonus irl adventures for the cast.

Currently, just Stretch exists- but Frills will be made soon enough! Party members will be prioritized, but everyone loves a good side character.
In next episode: Eerie and Stretch set off for their new League adventure- will Stretch trust its new companion, or be skeptical of her motives...

Suggest how Stretch should feel about this new companion! All answers will be put on a random wheel and spun...this is a randomizer, after all.

This is going to be my second serious run of this game, if you don't know what Mewgenics is, it's a tactics RPG by Edmund Mcmillen, where you breed cats to use in a DnD-inspired dungeon crawl. In my first playthrough, I didn't really take advantage of disorder traits at all, so that is what this one I'm posting here is going to focus on showcasing.

Rules:
-Tutorial and minor events will be skipped for brevity
-Where possible select cats that have disorders for runs and breeding
-Kamikaze, Chungus, and Deja Vu do not count for this, as they do not affect cats beyond giving a uniformly negative or positive effects.
-Fight god and win! No need for secret ending, it's too long to do.

As for why this playthrough is called that? Disorders can be gained easily through two methods, inbreeding and low health. Most people will play this and encounter the inbreeding disorders as they are a consequence of selectively breeding for desired traits, but these are not what I'm going for to start, and that means we require a certain house feature...

Poop.

Each poop in our house gives -2 health, which we will be trying to keep at a fairly high negative value, as disorders only have a 15% chance of being passed on to offspring cats. The comfort loss from doing this also means we are going to have to specialise our cat breeding more, as we will be only able to support small amounts of cats in the house for a limited time.

Please comment in this thread if you have anything to share, feedback, ideas, lamentations over kitties, etc.

It's 2026 and we got too many games so I wanna start with going over my general rough feelings on all the big ones active right now, as well as some brief post-mortem on a few from last year. Lets make this nice and quick, I'll update as needed.

2026 FIGHTING GAME OVERVIEW PART 1 -

STREET FIGHTER 6 - THE GENRE LEADER

Image Description: Ingrid, a youthul looking alien magical girl in aesthetics invoking mediterianian and reinnisance imagery through its flowy patterns and materials, she wears a hat that has two large muff like elements. She holds a book in one hand, with magic wisps around her.

Three years in it's still by far the best entry point right now for a number of key reasons:

It does everything possible to teach you the game and break down most of the main barriers people have getting into it. Its onboarding its smooth, its learning process is intuitive, it is rich in content and strong in terms of presentation. It's not necissarily going to be everyone's game with it's slower grounded gameplay contrasted against high damage and a few oddities akin to the VS series leading to it being less "pure" by some oldhead standards but it does the job pretty damn well. Character is put on the forefront more than the series has since I'd argue Alpha which is great.

As far as DLC has gone, Year 3 feels like it wanted to cleanse the palette by having every new character bring something fresh and different in contrast to how homogonized Year 2 felt with Terry and Mai as two more all-rounders and Bison being a strike/throw machine in a game full of them. Sagat is a heavy brawler with big buttons made fresh and fun with hits new focus on Muay Thai strikes as if they took the comparisons to Fahkuram of Tekken personally. C.Viper is pure fun if you're someone who loves having plenty of options and room for personal expression. Alex... well, that I'll save for its own post. Ingrid is the main one I'm waiting for personally, I was praying she'd be something straight out of Darkstalkers and instead she's a full on anime fighter character.

Tournament entry numbers are massively skewed toward this game, and while I'm not too fond of the marketing side of this game handling Capcom Cup the way they did the core gameplay is still fun if needing a bit more tuning of the top cast.

DRAGON BALL FIGHTERZ - IT'S BACK AGAIN

[Image Description: Super Saiyan 4 Goku from Dragon Ball Daima, a large muscular man with ape-like body hair and big spikey anime hair all a distinctive wine red. He has sharp outlines around his scowlinng eyes and cartoonishly large hands.]

Bandai Namco seemingly has taken the wheel fully from Arc Sys, Daima Goku is fun but he looks and plays like a fan mod. I think the game still maintains the power of being a fun casual fighter and incredible presentation but it's clear the days of it being one of the big hitters are long gone after too many gameplay overhauls in the wrong direction. Still, it's a palette cleanser to come back to after a certain other Tag Fighter this year we'll talk about.

I have to note he's 8 USD unlike the other characters who at full price are 5 USD so you're paying more for less, emblematic of 2026 really.

GUILTY GEAR STRIVE 2.0 - BACK TO BASICS

[Image Description: Jam, a chinese chef and martial artist wearing a outfit reflecting both of those elements with the chef's coat on top and large arcing hair knots holding a bunny wearing a collar in one hand.]

Strive has always been a game I've had a massive love hate relationship. When it launched it was fun but matches took ten minutes to find due to a awful lobby system via the Tower and outside of a handful of characters everyone feeling very undertuned and unfinished. Still, this entire game runs off the power and presence of its cast and despite ultimately finding it hard to stomach as this weird mishmash of SFV-isms and a toned down streamlined air dasher loosely playing into the legacy of its old games I keep coming back every once in awhile.

Season 4 was a big push with a guest, a anime miniseries (a pretty bad one honestly), a normal quickplay ranked system, and the most taboo thing of all:
Adding a conventional shoto ala Ryu/Ken/Akuma through Unika. It did good for the game but ultimately if you weren't sold on the current massively powercrept and messy state of it.. it wasn't going to be for you.

2.0 is a massive overhaul of the game and systems, one that is genuinely great for the most part albeit with a few key points of pain to bring up.

Jam is finally here, she has a bunny, all is pretty good right now in the world. She's very fun to play with her big flashy moves and speed in a game where half the cast is weirdly heavy for a Arc Sys fighter and while she's undeniably overtuned right now she's a welcome addition. Her Arcade mode having multiple chapters ala Blazblue's acts is also nice, something introduced for Lucy that seems to now be the standard going forward.

There will be alt costumes, weapon skins, a progression system, and battle passes ala Granblue Versus which are not fully implemented but if they're similarly priced and they continue the model of bringing back items later, that'll be nice.

Across the board offense and damage have mostly been nerfed with a few outliers (Millia, Leo, Nagoryuki, May, Jam and Happy Chaos are a whole conversation) allowing a more back and forth and interactive game. Wild Assault, a mechanic meant to add a universal neutral skip (increasingly the standard with SF6's Drive Rush, Granblue's 66L, Tekken's Heat, etc) was removed and replaced with something low power after being dominant and contributing to Season 3/4 feeling absurdly aggressive and snowbally. Movesets are reworked, everyone got patched and..

It puts me at a odd spot. At a core its a mechanically more thought out, smarter game that asks more from the player. It also further homogonized the individual characters by removing unique stregnths and making a lot of them... boring. Many of the attempts to revamp kits (Happy Chaos, Testament, Asuka) feel like they don't really work, legacy attributes of characters were removed just for the sake of being different ranging from Millia no longer having a anti-air standing Slash like previous games to.. making Sol a proper fireball shoto and gutting his Heavy Volcanic Viper, a move that was the core of his plan since the 2D games.

The big wave of people coming in through Dragon Ball Fighterz, through Strive, through SF6 is not going to be down to play a old school tag fighter where you die if you fuck up and you learn 30 second long TODs. The League fans aren't down to jump in on a game that turns their favorite characters into generic action figures that prioritize being a homage Yuzuhira from Under-Night in Birth over the characters they're invested in. It launched barebones, broken, only marketed to the hardcore FGC, and only appeals to people with a tolerance for bullshit developed by eating decades of Iron Man infinites.

The worst part is.. it's probably the most fun game mechanically here in a lot of ways, it is the most rewarding of a variety of skillsets. Too bad everything else about it feels like it barely made it out of Alpha. 30 USD skins aren't helping, Valorant rotating store and prices are probably a bigger reason launch flopped than just being too hard and unpolished.
It's very vibrant and lively with the same love and attention Arc Sys puts into games like Guilty Gear and DBFZ and even though I'm not the most familiar with the IP it's based on I'm always excited to see new characters. It is loaded with content and plenty of unlocks, a lobby with a lovely vibe, and a large cast that caters to every playstyle possible. It's my favorite being both a grounded weapons fighter and having some of that Blazblue sauce despite how drastically different the gameplay is and if you're looking at Marvel Tokon this is the closest game to it in a lot of ways. I'm hoping we get a Season 3 but for now a major update coming ith a new character is plenty.

I'm hoping we get a Season 3 but for now a major update coming ith a new character is plenty.

This is also the gayest game in the genre outside of niche super indie stuff.

I'll get to the pile of Tokon, Avatar Legends, Them's Fightin Herds, Invincible vs, Hunter x Hunter, etc at some point.

Comments and questions welcome.
YOU SHOULD PROBABLY SPOILER NEW ANIME SHIT THE WEEK IT COMES OUT THOUGH

ouuuuu dorohedoro. season 2 is coming out soon. como and i are starting to read the manga irl together (i have read it, he has not) and the time to make people aware of this one is now. settle in.

if you are unfamiliar with Dorohedoro, here's a fun summary off of wikipedia:

Quote:Dorohedoro (ドロヘドロ) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Q Hayashida. It was serialized in Shogakukan's manga magazines Monthly Ikki (November 2000 to September 2014), Hibana (March 2015 to August 2017), and Monthly Shōnen Sunday (November 2017 to September 2018); its chapters were collected in 23 tankōbon volumes. Dorohedoro tells the story of the amnesiac reptilian-headed Caiman, working together with his friend Nikaido to recover his memories and survive in a strange and violent world.

it is also largely about love and friendship and finding it in a hyper-grimy hellscape where any given moment has the chance to be covered in guts. as you can imagine we are highly fond of it.

if you are down with extreme violence and gore, and surreal writing styles/narratives, i can't recommend it enough. it is cool as hell, funny as fuck, and has some of the most lovable characters i have in my "media i love" roster.

with that: opening 2 is out.
