[GAME THREAD] Pick And Mix Play By Post Adventure IC Thread
Posted by: Ignispark - 01-27-2022, 07:01 PM - Forum: [GAMING_DEN] - Replies (103)

[STATIONARY_FRICTION]:
(Hello there. This is the game thread for the Pick And Mix adventure! Please see the linked out of character thread if you would like to join or comment on the ongoing game! You can make a character at any point and stumbling upon the area or falling through space can be arranged as needed. I am your Captain of Gaming, [STATIONARY_FRICTION], and I am in charge of the setting and non-player characters and whatnot.

Anyhow, the starting area is a pretty standard forest. I don't have every single possible life-form for the forest plotted out, so if you're looking for something in particular feel free to let me know.

I'll be doing this introductory post, then let everyone do a response to that. And then I'll do one more reply that's meant to lead people towards the meeting area. Then you do one more, and then we transition to doing things as a group. So basically, you'll be doing around two posts before you meet everyone.)

The sky is overcast, but calm. It is about mid-day, though between the clouds and the dense foliage, this area is reminiscent of night. Luckily, the local wildlife help some with this problem. There are quite a few pieces of wildlife which supplement the light, from some of the fruits on shrubbery, to warning marks on some poisonous bugs, to some of the markings on birds. Hopefully though, any adventurers present haven't forgotten to bring a source of light. You could very well stub your toe on a root or trip on a vine if you're not careful.

Speaking of adventurers, we'll begin with Maxim, who has yet to enter the forest. They're accompanied by the wandering knight, Cliche, who wields around a glaive featuring a large gem. Their traveling companion, a small lizard creature nicknamed Shard, is a mischievous little creature. Cliche is surprisingly decent at navigation and has explored these woods a couple times. They're planning on departing from the nearby town of around seven Beacons (not counting visitors like Maxim or themself) as they believe it's time to continue their ever-meandering journey without end. Luckily, Cliche seems to be able to emit light from their helmet so even if Maxim forgot to bring a flashlight, there'll be enough to see by.

As far as interesting things about the forest of note that Maxim may have heard of...probably ingredients would stand out the most. There's quite a few, from the glowing bittersweet purple fruits on various shrubbery, to the array of small game available ranging from the non-poisonous bugs to some small gliding salamanders that feed on nectar and pollinate plants, there are many opportunities for ingredients. There are a few options for larger game, though they mostly avoid Beacons and would put up a fight. All in all, this should be a relatively safe trip.

Kara on the other hand, likely has no bearings on this situation, as it's yet another unknown exit from The Connection, leaving her once again in an unfamiliar part of Ascent. Notably, a large orange flower with glowing petals is atop a massive thorny shrub. It's light allows you to see a metal hatch, though you would have to find a way to wrest it free from the roots covering a roughly half of the hatch.

Do has likely stumbled out of the Connection at another point in the forest. There, a large, lavender deer-like creature watches carefully. It's roughly four times the size of the average beacon and it seems interested by the odd little creature that just popped into existence. It glows brightly enough that you can see the immediately surroundings decently well. The forest is calm and silent enough you could hear the shadow of a pin drop. No other animals are nearby.

Vembrace....has stumbled upon an interesting little clearing, where the light does actually reach in the forest. There are various small lizards traipsing about an array of oddly shaped flowers. There's also a small piece of metal sticking out of the ground. It seems to be the corner of something. It'd take a bit of work, but one could try to dislodge it. (If you had to make a guess, it's probably a crate.)

Hi! I'm Archivist_Aspirant, but my friends call me Archie.

I'm in marketing by trade but I have a deep fascination with "cursed objects" which I've recently learned aren't cursed at all!
I've started curating a collection of these objects and I'm looking to add to my collection, as well as identify and catalog cursed objects outside my collection! (I'll be making a thread about it hehehe)
Looking to meet other wizards and witches and learn more from them. Feel free to DM me on Messiroom if you'd like to talk! I have a lot of questions about scraps and wizardry in general, I've only recently discovered my sensitivity.

  [DISCUSSION] Species Brainstorming Thread
Posted by: skinstealer - 01-16-2022, 02:01 AM - Forum: [WORLDBUILDING] - Replies (12)

here we discuss potential ideas for new species morphs and variants...a fun way to give commissioners (and team members) ideas of stuff to buy/make!

here's some things to keep in mind

morph- a subtype of a species, generally based on the "framework" of a species. species have various themes and recurring traits that define them as that species, such as karacels being based on types of cat/fur types, and flexins being based on types of parties. morbit evolution can also tie into the development of weirder morphs, such as planthopper neuroths being the result of neuroth movements towards a more peaceful and docile culture.

not all team members want to work with the more in depth morbit evolution mechanics, though- currently known team members down for it are:

mortis

variant- an example of a more specific appearance a morbitian can take within a morph's categorization- such as ghost mantis variant of a mantis neuroth, or a date variant of a lovestruck morph flexin. you can get as specific as you want with these, considering there are countless variants for any morph, and they're more a way to inspire more unique/granular designs than an official (in universe) categorization!

you can provide images/references/reasoning with your ideas, if you like!

here are some frameworks for species: (more to be added later)

TAVERNE
karacel- types of cat/fur type
ruffneck- type of dog/canine (vulpines + hyenadae also okay)
pockitt- type of rodent/lapine/marsupial
selected- type of snake
mothlie- type of mythical/fantasy creatures + moths, forest associations are a bonus
snuglin- types of animal plush/toy, specific plush reference especially good
botley- types of robot pet

LUXSON
beatfox- shapes/type of music
corvice/OBJ- type of animal categorization/specific animals
centinel- type of ungulate (cetaceans count)
comber- type of mythical/fantasy creatures + bees
fallow's construct- type of natural material used to make them
gummi catfish- type of candy + aquatic creature
de'moneres- type of card suit/money or gambling related things
masque- type of masked creature (raccoons, lemurs, badgers, etc, not limited to mammals)

UNNAMED SKINSTEALER SYSTEM REGION
concept- these don't really count do they
skipper- types of boat
courier- types of slug/snail, can also just be weird aquatic things if you wanna get funky
tauntamount- type of fishing lure
neuroth- type of predatory insect/arachnid

GENERAL
flexin
- type of party/gathering ritual is done at
shrouds- eye type (get weird with it)
pinitelle- different kinds of pinata
elemental- different elements
zwadeim- (technically dont have morphs + dont count)

ATELIER
amerveille-
animal + type of creative work (like writing, drawing, etc.) combo
batisson- bat species + bug species combo

IDYTH
luko-
types of plant(s)
gesabotts- different models/versions (typically very similar)
trillvette- types of racing vehicles

OCTRUS
chorosy-
protective suit/gear (not armor)
volare- different sizes with a varying amount of limbs (might not count)

EVA SIERRA
replix-
mimics any specific god but with minor differences/oddities

MELOCANIA
pippets-
based on dice, coins, or other similar 'play' tools

other team members please give me your species to list here if interested

(OOC NOTE: Trying out a new mechanic for this quest! In addition to suggestions, you can select any of the text in the current update or previous updates and request more information on it! To do so on most computers, simply highlight the text, and a small "reply" button should appear beneath it. It should end up looking like the post below. Without the response, of course.)

You are a BAREBONES.

You live in Draw, a city on the outskirts of Monte.

This is your first job. You selected it because your kind has a natural affinity for mining jobs. It's what you were built for, after all. The pay is good, and the job offers upkeep benefits for any construct employees, which is what attracted you in the first place. Your creator also said it would be a good transition into the world, since it had a variety of both barebones and other creatures to interact with. You've been told your social skills are less than adequate. This is typical for a barebones your age, but other species tend to be alienated by it. It's something you're working on.

You arrive at the Draw Crystal Corporation. The building is old and rundown, with a faded billboard that reads "Draw-ing the best high-quality crystals from the soil since 288!" It's a play on words you've seen in 126 other adverts in this town, not counting repeat ads in the newspaper. Statistically speaking, it's a tired joke to say the least.

Which FRAME are you? (Click links for images)

Biped Frame- The original design for the Barebones, and the kind most still use as a starting point. Consists of a standard body shape with a lightweight and skeletal design. The rectangular head features a lens with a small light for illuminating dark areas. The unit stands at roughly 6 feet tall.

Lifter Frame- A heavy quadruped frame with a flat back for carrying large objects. Consists of a rectangular body with four large legs, each with a set of gripper claws for traction and stability. The platform on the back is mounted on a gyroscopic joint, which can tilt to avoid disturbing sensitive cargo, and there are numerous open loops present for securing the cargo with straps. The front of the torso has a rotating lens and a pair of floodlights. The unit stands at roughly 4 feet tall.

Sheala Frame- A pod-shaped frame designed for deep sea exploration. The turbines on either side can unfold into a pair of legs for land travel. Consists of a teardrop-shaped body with two large legs, each with a set of turbines built in. They have a small set of folding arms for manipulating objects, as well as a large lens and a pair of floodlights protected by a thick plexiglass dome. The unit stands at roughly 4 feet tall.

Crawler Frame- A small insectoid frame designed for scouting and charting new areas. Consists of a spherical shell that divides into eight sections. The tip of each section serves as a claw to dig into surfaces, allowing them to crawl along most walls or ceilings. They can retreat into their shell at any time for protection or for rolling along surfaces. The sphere is 6 inches in diameter and has a telescopic lens with a small light built in. The unit stands at roughly 1 foot tall when unfolded.

Nymph Frame- A miniature version of the Biped frame designed for long-distance flight. Its short legs aren't suited for walking more than small distances at a time, but they can fold into the chest area for more streamlined flight. The unit stands at roughly 18 inches tall.

Scorpion Frame- A large, six-legged frame with a retractable jackhammer tail for demolition and excavation. The attachment on the tail can be easily removed and replaced for different purposes, making this frame excellent for more specialized applications. The outer shell curves up and around the tail while retracted to provide protection and stability. The unit stands at roughly 3 feet tall.

[???] Pick And Mix Play By Post Adventure OOC Thread
Posted by: Ignispark - 12-25-2021, 06:35 PM - Forum: [GAMING_DEN] - Replies (70)

[STATIONARY_FRICTION]:

Pick and Mix
An Introduction
Greetings. I'm Stationary Friction and I will be running a play-by-post adventure role-playing game thread. Of those aspects, it will likely be leaning heavily into the role-playing part more-so than the numbers floating about that some with experience in the field may be accustomed to. Luckily, this should make this a fairly simple game to watch and play, aiding me in running the adventure. Allow me to explain the premise more below.

First, as the Captain of Gaming, I shall stitch together the setting from what will be discussed in the next session. This, combined with the premise of your character, explained in the section following the setting section, will provide you with the starting scenario and context upon which the campaign will be based. After the starting scenario is provided, you will all be free to attempt actions. I will provide you with the results of your action based on your character and the situation. Ideally, I would love to get away with this being a mostly dice-free game, but I may occasionally use dice for an element of chance where there is an in-universe object dependent on chance, as a tool to decide the outcome of a contest between players, or in other appropriate scenarios. Though, if players put forward sufficient interest, I can absolutely change this. In any case, the resulting rule-set will vary some by the outcome of the setting.

The setting will be the first part of the campaign to be created. Luckily, whether you wish to play or not, the setting has a wonderful twist. You may provide an input to influence the setting of the game. You have up to twelve words. Use them alone, in sentences, or in any other way you wish and I shall glue together the parts of the model of what has yet to be into the claws of the present. I will then provide a write-up providing a summary of the setting in general, notable locations, important groups, and other information that is useful to those trying to create characters. Do remember to follow all forum rules. I also ask that you be sparing in references to existing companies or similar things, as I might have to take liberties to make an appropriate parody of the input. Additionally, I may tone things down a touch if the setting seems to be getting overwhelmingly dark in totality. Otherwise, I'll try to make just about anything work.

Based on the outcome of the setting, I will offer a template to create characters with. It is highly probably that fields for the character's name or other designation in addition to any pronouns used will be offered, in addition to choices regarding your form, capabilities, and other relevant details. The exact specifications will be tailored to how the theme or genre of the setting seems to be once I have all inputs in, but the above should let you know what you can keep in mind. As a note, I will incorporate concepts for backstory or origin for the lore as best as I can, but for those whom I have no superior solution, I may have to suggest that your character simply slips in through a hole between worlds or use a similar plot device. You may of course, also intentionally ask for that origin. Additionally, while I will try to roll with bits brought up through conversation where I can, some things might not be salvageable, especially when regarding major faction or conflicting previously established facts. If someone wishes to join and the game has already started, I will see what I can do to get them in, likely conferring with that player to place them at a destination or random event that makes reasonable sense.

In summary, if you wish to do so, regardless of if you wish to play, I would ask that you provide up to twelve words to be utilized for the basis of the setting. As stated above, they can be in sentences, poems, or anything else, as long as all the word count involved sums to twelve or fewer. Please also indicate that the twelve words are meant for the setting input. Additionally, if you have any comments or questions, feel free to reply with that. Additionally, if you are interested in being a player, or perhaps simply plan to watch very intently, I would be delighted to read about what you enjoy in games and stories so that I will have some more insight in how I should put things together.

I'll note when I'm beginning to finish up the setting parts, but even after that if you post something I may see if I can fit it in before getting the setting primer and character template up. After that, I'll be closing off setting inputs as I take character inputs.
