[OFF FORUM BLOG] MINIATURIZED WORKSHOP SIX
#13
Journal: A New Oddity.
Apologies for those looking for an update with regards to the other files, but I have been a touch busy...there is a lot to cover when I get back to it, including interactions with other files...it is quite fascinating, truly.

I am getting...let's call it a stipend. To look into something else...and a touch more personal computing equipment which is to be used for this project in particular. It is purported to be something of a lost media piece? It's a bit of a tricky thing, seems to hate being recorded, certain types of hardware, and other things...but.

Well, I don't suppose any of you have heard of Abyss Ranger? I have not found anything in my own personal research about it, but that could simply be a product of it being a small project. Anyhow, from the small snippets of manual my benefactor sent to me it's an old game about befriending creatures in the depths of someplace odd. Though I suppose it wouldn't make much sense for it to be too old given from what I've seen it seems to be overtly inspired by horror genre trends in game rather on the nose...anyway. It's not nearly as intricate as the last stuff I talked about in terms of the actual creatures, but it has some fascinating worldbuilding and atmosphere...not to mention I have no idea how it keeps avoiding being recorded. Kind of wonder if this one's an elaborate prank? But, it's a prank I'm getting paid for if so...so...

You know how it can be.

Right, I am getting off track. There is quite a lot to talk about. The ranger is not too interesting honestly, there seems to be some scant info about them the player character between the manual and game but the uh. Abyss? I suppose. Seems to kind of be one of those stereotypical Nightmare realms. Fear based things, and that's kind of where the charm of it really goes in. Most of the creatures and monsters seem to be rather abstract things. The devs clearly put a lot of care into it. I do wonder if this is intended as a beta testing experience for something pretending to be retro. I do not know.

Anyway, the tutorial is not particularly present. I think it is a game that expects you to do your own experimentation, perhaps derived from a retro veneer? I am not really sure. It could also be a failing of an incomplete manual.

Anyways, it seems to be a sort of contextual puzzle. You use something in the environment as well as some traits you can observe about the creature to set up a 'hangout' to add the creature to your party? I think. I have only actually gotten one done successfully so far.

There is this. Eel? I suppose eel is the closest descriptor I can think of off hand, that seems to be related to static and tension. The related item, was a violin. Honestly, a bit odd? But some of the torn journal pages in game seemed to be intended as hints? Not really sure why they felt the need to add in found footage elements like that. Right, so, I am not entirely sure what exactly ended up doing it right but after setting up a campsite in the right area so that it would align the middle of a lullaby at midnight, I was able to successfully add it to the party. The name field was just a glitchy mess, which. Makes sense. Maybe it will change later on? Or maybe it is just another random smattering of horror elements? I genuinely do not know where this is going.

I will provide eel updates later. And also eventually update the rest of my blog. But first, eels.
