CROSSBONE: L-look, just-
CROSSBONE: Everybody sh- Shut up for a sec!
????: Oh, sure. Of course.

They tilt their hood at Corsair.

????: See?
????: You gotta shut up for a bit.
CROSSBONE: She-
CROSSBONE: You're the one who's-
????: Shouldn't have used everybody then!

You are beginning to wonder if this trip is a good idea- for an entirely new, unexpected reason.

This guy is annoying as fuck.

CROSSBONE: LOOK
CROSSBONE: I just- I just want to-
CROSSBONE: I JUST WANT TO BECOME A MONSTER, OKAY!
????: ....
????: ........eh?
????: You a fuckin' pervert or something?

Your chest sinks.

????: L-like, holy shit
????: You actually WANT this?!
????: Hey. Hey. Snake. Cowboy snake lady.
????: She for real?

She shrugs.

CORSAIR: Some people wanna look different.
CORSAIR: Don't really see the problem.
CORSAIR: Not sure why you're questionin' and judgin' her considerin' what you get up to.
????: HEY

That immediately hits a nerve, the curse user writhing around and kicking their legs.

????: You got NO right to assume you
????: "GET"
????: ME
CORSAIR: Wasn't sayin' that I know everything about you.
CORSAIR: But I get that you curse people.
CORSAIR: Change people's lives, sometimes destroyin' 'em in the process.
CORSAIR: Now you got someone here, right in front of ya-

Her thumb claw points over to Cross.

CORSAIR: -sayin' she actually wants you to do that.
CORSAIR: No huntin' anyone down.
CORSAIR: No ruinin' their life.
CORSAIR: So, not sure what you're bent outta shape over.
CORSAIR: Shouldn't you wanna do it? Ain't that what your goal is?
CORSAIR: If not, then what the hell's the point?
CORSAIR: What's all this for?
CORSAIR: ...Just looks like a kid havin' a tantrum that's gone too far, from where I'm standin'.
????: .....
????: Tch.
????: Alright.
????: Aaaaalrighty!
????: Shows what y'all know.
????: I'll indulge you.

An enormous flash of light sears through the clearing, blinding you, your ears ringing-

Your screen fizzles as you try to get your bearings- when did you fall over? When-

The curse user isn't in Corsair's glove any more.

They're in front of you.

Their head tilts.

????: Let's do a demonstration.

They move their sleeve in a flourish, a black and white paw visible as they hold some kind of...lightbulb.

????: We'll see if you get it more then.

They throw it at the ground, shattering it into the snow.

Black ooze seeps out from the shards, a sickening feeling growing in your chest.

????: See you never.

The entire world goes dark.

You feel the pulse.

It starts slow, faint colors cutting through the abyss.

It gets louder, each throbbing beat making it more clear.

Neon, blacklight contours, as if the clearing was sketched in glowing ink.

At first, Corsair is

baffled.
Extremely so.

Not having a clue how they'd gotten out.

Only to spot the light.

She rushes over,
getting between it and you.

CORSAIR: I've got it, get back.

Her scepter raises.

Neon wells up within it, as it vibrates violently in her claw.

She glances over at it, trying to puzzle this out.

ZAP!

A spark careens off her scepter, immediately striking her chest.

Her form freezes,
beginning to burn away; eroding into dark magenta.

The scepter spins in the air,
then falls into the grass.

The dark spot where Corsair had been fades.

Something moves within it, though.

Something tiny.

A figure within stands up, hardly coming up to your knee.

A very, very small plush, one without much detail.
A toy's toy;
an accessory,
a trinket.

A snake plush, sporting a minuscule poncho and hat.

CORSAIR:   .   .   .

CORSAIR: ...Hell.

A laugh echos from the dark, first shocked, then hysterical.

????: WOW
????: Even better than I thought!
????: Holy shit!
????: H-holy shit. You're so small.
????: Haaaave fun!

Another loud pulse, and the chill...shifting.

They're gone.

The leaf contours rustle, ink redrawn in real time as there's movement in the bushes.

CROSSBONE: C-
CROSSBONE: Corsair-
CORSAIR: I got it, I-

She moves towards her scepter on instinct,
but the neon lights are still pulsing from it.

CORSAIR:  .  .  .

Her eyes next glance over to the black bulb, still in the ground; still painting the nearby landscape in neon.

CORSAIR: That light.
CORSAIR: Gotta be what's doin' this.
CORSAIR: ...Shouldn't touch the scepter while that thing's here.
CORSAIR: Gotta pull that thing out or break it.
CORSAIR: ...That's my best gue-

The scepter glows brighter, sparks of neon splashing off from it,
'staining' the nearby grass as Corsair backs up.
The bulb, in turn, does the same.

A cacophony of buzzing fills the air, the plush making her way all the way back to Cross, now,
shielding her eyes as the lights get too bright.

CORSAIR: Cross-

A loud CRASH! rings out, as the black bulb bursts,
its broken shards fizzling away into nothing.

The impossible dark recedes, now replaced with a more natural one.
In less than an hour, it has become night.

The scepter sheds a few stray sparks,
then the sphere at its top goes completely dark; inactive, from the looks of it.

CORSAIR: . . .

She steps over to it, carefully touching a push claw against it.

CORSAIR: ...hot to th' touch.
CORSAIR: But I think it's safe to carry.

The snake tries to do so, but it's clearly too heavy for her.
She curses under her breath.

CORSAIR: ...Cross, would you mind?
CORSAIR: We need out of here. Sooner the-

You snatch up the trinket and her scepter before she can even react, fully intent on bailing the fuck out.

The plush makes a noise somewhere between a question and a surprised yelp.

CORSAIR: ...CROSS!
CORSAIR: WOULD Y-
CORSAIR: DAMMIT, SLOW DOWN!
CROSSBONE: I WILL SLOW DOWN WHEN WE ARE OUT OF HERE!!!!!!!!!!
CORSAIR: WE'RE NOT GONNA GET OUT OF HERE WITH YA SPRINTIN' THROUGH THE FOREST AT NIGHT LIKE YOU'RE ON FIRE!
CORSAIR: If there's anythin' else dangerous out here then all this noise is just gonna draw it to us!
CORSAIR: So SLOW DOWN before you hurt yourself!

You skid to a stop with a grating beep, keychain tail nearly tripping you up in the process.

Corsair is clinging tightly to your arm, still shaken from the roller coaster ride.

CORSAIR: ...alright.
CORSAIR: Alright, we just need to...
CORSAIR: ...God's sake, I don't even know where we are, anymore...

She places a rounded plush claw to her forehead, eyes closed.

CORSAIR: ...got no supplies to set up camp.
CORSAIR: We're... just gonna have to keep movin'.
CORSAIR: Quietly this time; no panickin' like that again.
CORSAIR: We move slow but keep movin' in a persistent direction.
CORSAIR: ...Moon's not out tonight, so...
CORSAIR: ...just... gonna have to pick a direction.
CORSAIR: Look for buildings, or even better: Lights.
CORSAIR: When we see somethin', we investigate slowly, from a good vantage point.
CORSAIR: Make sure we know what we're walkin' into.
CORSAIR: ...You good, kid?

You're frozen in place, the only movement a small, buzzing vibration as you try to calm the hell down.

CROSSBONE: I-
CROSSBONE: Nn-
CROSSBONE: dont do well in pitch black like that

You are very aware that your internal beeping is audible to Corsair, a pulse you're desperately hoping slows.

CROSSBONE: Don't. Don't tell the others.
CROSSBONE: Night's fine.
CROSSBONE: No issue with. Night time.
CROSSBONE: fuck

She's quiet for a moment;
looking away, claw rubbing the back of her neck.

CORSAIR: ...We're gonna get back, alright?
CORSAIR: Chances are the scepter lights up again soon enough.
CORSAIR: And then we'll be fine.

She subtly glances over, likely trying to see if that helped at all.

You let out a little fizzle, and then a nod.

CROSSBONE: O-
CROSSBONE: okay
CORSAIR: ...Let's...
CORSAIR:  . . .
CORSAIR: ...How 'bout we keep movin', and
CORSAIR: we can... talk, a little bit.
CORSAIR: That... sound good?

You start to snap out of it.

CROSSBONE: Y
CROSSBONE: Ye-yeah.
CROSSBONE: Um
CROSSBONE: I just..walk and we talk?
CROSSBONE: Anywhere?
CROSSBONE: i can't really see where we're going
CORSAIR: Just go slow, vision should adjust as you go.
CORSAIR: And keep your voice low, quiet.
CORSAIR: ...If I tap your arm, stop and don't talk til I say to keep movin'.
CORSAIR: Easy enough?

You nod-

-taking your first few steps.

CORSAIR:  . . .

CORSAIR:  . . ..

CORSAIR:  . . .

After far too long, she finally seems to realize you aren't speaking first.

CORSAIR:  . . .

CORSAIR:  . . .

CORSAIR: ...Hobbies?
CORSAIR: D'you-
CORSAIR: Have ya got any, I mean?

She isn't very good at this.

CROSSBONE: oh
CROSSBONE: oh, Um
CROSSBONE: I do...fashion design.
CROSSBONE: and modeling
CORSAIR: ...tell me about that.
CROSSBONE: W-well-
CROSSBONE: Where I come from, Playscape...
CROSSBONE: It's...tricky.
CROSSBONE: People like, me, and I guess- all of our party-
CROSSBONE: ...aren't liked very much.
CROSSBONE: Just...in a different way than here.
CROSSBONE: ...I get to be a part of a movement against that, I guess.

You laugh, just a little.

She rubs her forehead, clearly not getting it.

CORSAIR: ...with... modeling?
CROSSBONE: Oh-
CROSSBONE: It's-
CROSSBONE: Uh...
CROSSBONE: Okay, so- it's a city.
CROSSBONE: Right?
CORSAIR: Followin' so far.
CROSSBONE: And it's a really big city.
CROSSBONE: And...there's not enough to go around.
CROSSBONE: Or...
CROSSBONE: There would be.
CROSSBONE: J-just-

You feel your voice getting angrier.

CROSSBONE: It's all owned by just-
CROSSBONE: All these rich fucks
CORSAIR: How most cities work, yeah.
CROSSBONE: Yeah.
CROSSBONE: But-
CROSSBONE: It's like- free for all.
CROSSBONE: As long as you're in the right place, you can get killed no issue.
CROSSBONE: And people take the parts.
CROSSBONE: ...I'm part of a group that takes in like- low-income toys.
CROSSBONE: Newbies, especially.
CROSSBONE: And gives them a place.
CORSAIR: ...Live there yourself?
CROSSBONE: We all do.
CORSAIR:  . . .
CORSAIR: And the... fashion? Design n' modelin', all that?
CROSSBONE: Oh, um-
CROSSBONE: I help make garments for people.
CROSSBONE: And...um
CROSSBONE: um
CROSSBONE: hm
CROSSBONE: one of
CROSSBONE: um.

You did not realize you'd be explaining kink fashion to a cowboy today.

CORSAIR: ...got... entertainment there, I'm guessin'?
CORSAIR: That kinda thing?
CROSSBONE: Yes!
CROSSBONE: Yep!
CROSSBONE: s-
CROSSBONE: SELF EXPRESSION
CROSSBONE: and all that

She chuckles.

CORSAIR: Uh-huh.
CORSAIR: Sounds like it.
CORSAIR: Well, I'm glad it's somethin' you're proud of.

You let out a relieved beep.

CROSSBONE: ...thanks.
CROSSBONE: I really am.
CROSSBONE: It's-

Something's bright in the distance-

The silhouette of a building just barely visible.

CROSSBONE: C-Corsair!
CROSSBONE: Look!!

She pulls herself up higher on your arm.

There's palpable relief on her face,
though she's trying to tone it down a little.

CORSAIR: ...Probably good news.
CORSAIR: Head in that direction, just stay real quiet.
CORSAIR: If it looks safe, we head in, and we've got shelter.

Your footfalls are quiet as you creep closer to the light, one step, and then another, and then anoth-

Your foot steps on something hard.

Ceramic.

You freeze.

CROSSBONE: c
CROSSBONE: c-cor-
CROSSBONE: please don't tell me that's
CORSAIR: Step back-
CORSAIR: ...It's a corpse.
CORSAIR: Someone who got cursed, looks li-
CORSAIR: -Doesn't matter right now, just means it's not safe.
CORSAIR: Head back, hurry-

Before you can even think about-

????: Back up.

There is

a gun.

Pointed at your head.

i
oh god
ohgodohgodohgod

You had taken out the duster so easily.

Small monsters, no big deal.
It's different.

Way different.

The ragmirror nearly killed you- it's a fucking miracle it didn't.
But that was, yknow, a new experience.
You'll never sleep easy again after that, your biggest fears realized, but you had no idea what you were even getting into there.

You absolutely, 100%, know in perfect, personal detail, how bad guns are when they're pointed at your fucking face.

You glance down at the plush you're holding.

She seems to be doing her best to stay entirely limp, trying to look like an average trinket.
Though, from your vantage point her eyes are open wide; thinking,
and trying to sneak a look at the person holding the gun.

You are now also looking at a porcelain doll corpse with its face shattered into a billion pieces.

Likely from being shot.

With the gun.

CROSSBONE: I- i
????: I said move.
CORSAIR: ...Vortex, hang on.

She's speaking, but still hasn't moved,
her voice seeming slightly muffled, or perhaps seeming to come from you.

CORSAIR: Need you to stay calm... and lower the gun, or at least take a step back.
CORSAIR: Not here to hurt you.

The gun immediately lowers, the toy in front of you looming with a distinctly monster-esque posture.

VORTEX: ...this some kind of joke?
VORTEX: ....

The barrel rises.

VORTEX: Not the first time I've heard a mimic.
VORTEX: Gun goes down when you can prove you're not one.
CORSAIR: . . .
CORSAIR: Vortex, this is... Willow, one of the new people who arrived in the village recently-
CORSAIR: Not the one speakin' right now, just-
CORSAIR: Need you to... not panic and shoot me.
CORSAIR: I haven't moved yet, but... I'm the... plush trinket that she's holdin' right now.
CORSAIR: I'm gonna sit up, and I need you to... not shoot me - or her - in the face.
CORSAIR: ...I wouldn't have played 'dead,' but seein' as you held a gun to us-
CORSAIR: I figured you'd blow my head off like ya must've with our friend here.
CORSAIR: So... can I sit up first, and we can keep talkin'?

It hesitates.

The gun falls again.

VORTEX: Not here.
VORTEX: Let me look through the body, I need to figure out who they were.

The toy gestures for you to back up- thankfully with a hand this time, rubbery and warty- and this time you do so immediately.

CROSSBONE: U-um
CROSSBONE: um
CROSSBONE: th
CROSSBONE: Thank you f-

It raises a hand to shush you, the rest of its body coming into view- the entire length of it- as it picks through the corpse.

Despite it all, you can't help but look.

You'd seen it a million times.

wrenches, knives, drills, screwdrivers, scissors, seam rippers, needles, hammers, crowbars

All in service of prying open toys to get at their guts.

Vortex is more careful, looking more like some of the jewelry specialists you work alongside. Meticulous, precise.

An expert.

CORSAIR:  . . .
CORSAIR: ...So I can or can't sit up?
CORSAIR: Cause I'm gonna be honest, it's gettin' awkward starin' at Willow's hand.
CORSAIR: And you already know I'm talkin' right now, so...
VORTEX: Sure.
CORSAIR: Oh thank god.

The tiny cowboy sits up, stretching her back,
rolling one arm.

CORSAIR: ...you recognize me from the bar?
CORSAIR: When we arm wrestled?
CORSAIR: ...Well... 'recognize' in a pretty loose sense, at this point.
VORTEX: Yeah.

It finds a pocketwatch and grimaces.

VORTEX: Like I said.
VORTEX: Don't talk out here.

Its fingers pinch the chain of the watch, the surface indiscernible in the dark.

VORTEX: ....I'll show you the cabin.
CORSAIR: ...fair enough.
CORSAIR: Gonna need an apology, though.
CORSAIR: For my friend here, especially.

Its head rolls back, giving the trinket a tired expression as it gestures for her to both zip her lips and follow.

She shrugs,
waiting as you follow along.

The monster-like toy gets moving.
You try not to wince as you have to hop over the dead fucking body on the ground as you follow, and fail miserably.

its fine its fine its fine its fine

And with as many repeats as you can muster and keeping your mind as dissociated as possible from whatever the hell is around you after that, you realize you're in front of a cabin made of wooden, interlocking logs.

Vortex unlocks...multiple padlocks, and gestures.

VORTEX: Inside.

It's not as big as the hunter's lodge by any stretch, but it's not small either- though it's immediately apparent why. What's large for you is small for Vortex, the rubbery toy having to mind scooting around furniture with its long body.

VORTEX: ...

It finally gets a look at Corsair.

VORTEX: ...........
VORTEX: You know, I had you pegged as being smarter than this.
VORTEX: Guess arm wrestling doesn't translate easy.
VORTEX: How'd you get turned into that.

She grunts, rubbing her face as she glances away.
The trinket looks embarrassed, or maybe just guilty.

CORSAIR: Listen buddy, you just held a gun to my face.

It was your own face, actually.

CORSAIR: So I'd appreciate dialin' back on the insults til I'm properly sized, alright?
CORSAIR: Now, you gonna apologize for nearly shootin' a hole through us?
VORTEX: Nope.

It settles on a long cushion you can only assume is a couch.

It closes its eyes for a moment before thinking over its words- delivered deadpan and exact in wording.

VORTEX: Ragmirrors aren't the only thing that can copy voices.
VORTEX: Faces, bodies, anything.
VORTEX: Glad it turned out that wasn't the case.
VORTEX: Would have been awful if I did shoot you.
VORTEX: Wouldn't feel good about it.
VORTEX: Not apologizing for following procedure.
VORTEX: If it was a mimic that got loose, you'd wish it'd been a gun threat instead.
CORSAIR: Oh, just shoot me already, ya crotchety thing.

She sighs.

CORSAIR: ...Look, I get it.
CORSAIR: Forest's got a lotta monsters, would've been bad, you were bein' prepared;
CORSAIR: I get it, spare the speech.
CORSAIR: You want an explanation?
CORSAIR: ...We ran into the curse user.

The plush seems to realize how that sounds.

CORSAIR: But don't go jumpin' to conclusions, I'm not about to come for your neck,
CORSAIR: or whatever the hell happened with your friend outside.
CORSAIR: ...I'm assumin' that's what happened there?

A slight raise of its eyelids, lounging onto its hand.

VORTEX: What'd they look like?
VORTEX: They say anything?

You finally speak up.

CROSSBONE: They-
CROSSBONE: They taunted us.
CROSSBONE: A lot!
CROSSBONE: Very, just-
CROSSBONE: Rude, s-sadistic even!
CROSSBONE: But in a stupid way!

The plush finally moves from your arm, plopping down nearby.

CORSAIR: ...I think 'stupid's the important word there.
CORSAIR: Young. Practically just a kid. Got some agenda even they probably don't fully understand.
CORSAIR: Mostly under a cloak. But I saw what looked like plush paws, and a feline tail.
CORSAIR:  . . .
CORSAIR: ...I was handlin' em fine.

She rubs her neck.

CORSAIR: Probably too easily.
CORSAIR: Got overconfident. Wasn't thinkin' as much.
CORSAIR: I knew, more or less, how their curses probably worked.
CORSAIR: Knew that wasn't gonna work on me, so... not really a big threat.
CORSAIR: ...They had somethin' else.
CORSAIR: This bulb with a black light, that they used.
CORSAIR: Not somethin' I'd seen before.
CORSAIR: It lit up the area, and - my guess is - anythin' in the area of the light that's magic, gets... corrupted.
CORSAIR: Any other magic turns cursed.

The trinket nods her head towards her scepter you're holding - its sphere still dimmed to nothing.

CORSAIR: Converted my scepter to curse magic.
CORSAIR: I touched it, did this to me.
CORSAIR: ...Bulb's gone, by the way.
CORSAIR: The magic in my scepter eventually...

She glances away,
as if trying to decide the best way to say this.

CORSAIR: ...burnt the bulb out.
CORSAIR: It burst, but my scepter got exhausted of the magic charge it had.
CORSAIR: So it - and me - are gonna be outta commission for a while.
CORSAIR: We didn't pick up what was left of the bulb, but it might be worth findin' it, if ya can; was in a clearing.
CORSAIR: ...Anyway, think I scared the curse user, cause they took off right after they saw my scepter do this to me.
CORSAIR: Probably could've stuck around, not like I could've done much like this.
CORSAIR: But I'm guessin' I'd scared 'em enough that they didn't wanna press their luck with me.

She shrugs.

CORSAIR: That's pretty much everything.

Vortex closes its eyes.

Taking a deep, heavy breath, their next words nearly unintelligible.

VORTEX: They're getting braver.

You jump as it rises back up from its seat, shoving aside a curtain and revealing a wall-high corkboard, covered in scribblings you can't make out, drawings and photos with paper on top to obscure them from a glance.

It stares at all of it.

You stop feeling scared, despite it all, as a deep look of grief enters its eyes.

VORTEX: ....
VORTEX: A question.
VORTEX: I know you came here seeking their power.
VORTEX: Depending on your answer, you either leave this place or I'll help you.

It doesn't look at you, unmoved from its scrawlings.

VORTEX: If the world ended for you and only you, with everyone else still "normal"-
VORTEX: -not death, but a complete apocalypse, but localized to yourself-
VORTEX: What would you do?

Dude whatever just. Can you make me a big sexy monster? Pretty please?
Posted by skinstealer - 01-15-2026, 01:53 AM
CROSSBONE: Well...
CROSSBONE: ........
CROSSBONE: Like, nothing-nothing?

You realize how awful that sounds.

CROSSBONE: S-
CROSSBONE: SORRY
CROSSBONE: Not...trying to be rude, just...
CORSAIR: ...was just wandering.
CORSAIR: What's it matter?
CROSSBONE: It's, just...
CROSSBONE: I don't....
CROSSBONE: Meet a lot of people like me.

You sway from side to side as you walk.

CROSSBONE: Like, I have sewing and stuff back home, but it's like-
CROSSBONE: Do you have anything like that?
CORSAIR: . . .
CORSAIR: ...hobbies?

She scratches the back of her neck.

CORSAIR: I'm always out on the road these days.
CORSAIR: Not much time to stop n' do things like that.
CORSAIR: ...I'm okay at pool. Just picked it up from, lots of bars.
CORSAIR: Guess wanderin' around counts. Kinda. Like to explore places, even if there's no people there.
CORSAIR: . . .

She holds up her scepter.

CORSAIR: I'm tryin' to work with this thing a little better.
CORSAIR: ...A lot of it's automatic, though.
CORSAIR: Usually just follow the magic's lead.
CORSAIR: ...It'd make more sense if you used this kinda magic. You can work it by just leanin' into it.
CORSAIR: Gotta be careful, though, cause it can get outta control easy.
CORSAIR: Sometimes I gotta direct it away. ...Haven't been able to do much more with it, yet.
CORSAIR: Combat's a different story, but that's more about... problem-solving.

The cowboy snaps her claws.

CORSAIR: Oh, that's somethin'.
CORSAIR: Haven't messed with 'em in ages, but... puzzles. Board games, too. Things like that.
CORSAIR: ...Did more back when I first spawned.
CORSAIR: . . .
CORSAIR: ...bit of piano.
CORSAIR: Baseball, acting, some... theater... stuff.
CORSAIR: Haven't messed with any of that in years, now.
CORSAIR: ...That enough of an answer?
CORSAIR: Why d'you wanna know so much about me, anyway?

...wow....

CROSSBONE: You...you know so many things!
CROSSBONE: I mean, I guess-
CROSSBONE: I guess that'd come with so much time outside of the Store, but- wow!
CROSSBONE: All I have is-

shit. making it about myself

CROSSBONE: A-anyway, it's-
CROSSBONE: ...if you're tagging along, I want to know who I'm fighting alongside.
CROSSBONE: In combat and outside of it.
CROSSBONE: ...if that's not an issue.
CORSAIR: ...you callin' me old?
CROSSBONE: I'm calling me young.
CROSSBONE: I've only been out for like, a year and a half.
CROSSBONE: ....
CROSSBONE: Not like age works in a line out here anyway.
CORSAIR: . . .
CORSAIR: I don't know that much, kid.
CORSAIR: How 'bout you talk about yourself, instead?
CORSAIR: Gimme a hint as to why this thing's-

She leans the scepter up over her shoulder.

CORSAIR: -locked onto you n' your friends.
CROSSBONE: ...I mean-
CROSSBONE: Would I...know...why?
CORSAIR: Doubt it.
CORSAIR: But more info means more of a chance for me to piece it together.
CROSSBONE: ...mmmm...
CROSSBONE: Only if you promise you won't.
CROSSBONE: Judge.
CROSSBONE: Or anything.
CORSAIR: Cross my heart.
CROSSBONE: ...so...
CROSSBONE: It's my idea to come out here and get cursed.
CROSSBONE: Everyone is...here because of me.
CROSSBONE: ......................

You do an anxious, awkward shoulder gesture.

CORSAIR: ...Yeah I figured as much.
CORSAIR: That you wanted that, anyway.
CORSAIR: ...Everyone else just taggin' along?
CROSSBONE: Well, it's not like I could come alone.
CROSSBONE: I don't have magic, and had to learn fighting...
CROSSBONE: I'm- we're all fresh at this.
CROSSBONE: ...except Roulette and Silk Ribbon.

Her head tilts ever-so-slightly.

CORSAIR: Huh...
CORSAIR: Wanna elaborate there?
CROSSBONE: ........

You realize you may have said too much.

CROSSBONE: WELL
CROSSBONE: THEY'RE JUST
CROSSBONE: They're both!
CROSSBONE: Way better at fighting!
CORSAIR: D'you know why they are, at all?

fuck

CROSSBONE: I mean-
CROSSBONE: Who can say!
CORSAIR: . . .
CORSAIR: Those two have history?
CROSSBONE: Not my business.

It comes out too fast.

CROSSBONE: ...or. Yours.
CROSSBONE: Not yours either.

SHIT

Corsair doesn't respond to that.

CROSSBONE: ....
CROSSBONE: I'm.
CROSSBONE: Not trying to be difficult.
CROSSBONE: I just don't want to say anything that people trusted me with.
CORSAIR: Didn't say you were.
CROSSBONE: Okay!
CROSSBONE: G-good!
CROSSBONE: Yeah!
CROSSBONE: A-anyway.
CROSSBONE: They're...easily the best fighters here.
CROSSBONE: Devo- the.

she already knows. it's okay.

CROSSBONE: The bears.
CROSSBONE: They're pretty good too, along with Tim, but-
CROSSBONE: We're all fresh to this.
CROSSBONE: Hell, Ribbon's outright a newbie.
CROSSBONE: By a few months. Tim too.
CORSAIR: Good t' know.
CORSAIR: About the fightin' thing.
CROSSBONE: ...yeah.
CROSSBONE: I...can't help...
CROSSBONE: But wonder if it's the right choice, though.
CROSSBONE: We almost died.
CROSSBONE: Multiple times, even.
CROSSBONE: ....
CROSSBONE: All because of me.
CORSAIR: ...Not really your fault.
CORSAIR: Everyone came out here t' support You doin' this, right?
CORSAIR: Runnin' into a ragmirror wasn't part of the plan, I'd imagine.
CORSAIR: ...Y'all probably are under-prepared, to be blunt.
CORSAIR: But that's not somethin' You did.
CROSSBONE: It was my mission, I-
CROSSBONE: I rushed into it.
CROSSBONE: I was too excited.
CORSAIR: Happens.
CORSAIR: Always gonna happen on your first one, pretty much.
CORSAIR: Can't account for everything, anyway.
CORSAIR: ...Everyone made it alive.
CROSSBONE: But!
CROSSBONE: They almost didn't!
CROSSBONE: A-all because I-

She stops, turning to you.

CORSAIR: What's it matter now?
CORSAIR: Even if that was true; you're here now, aren't you?
CORSAIR: What's beatin' yourself up about it gonna do?
CORSAIR: You're gettin' it done, and y'know more for the way back.
CORSAIR: Focus on that.
CROSSBONE: ...
CROSSBONE: ....yeah.
CROSSBONE: sorry
CORSAIR: Don't gotta apologize.

Corsair resumes walking.

You rub your elbow before continuing after her.

It's quiet.

Not long after she'd started walking again,

she stops.

Saying nothing.

The woods feel darker, than before;
trees closing in.

There's a distinct chill.

You slow down before stopping in place.

CROSSBONE: C.
CROSSBONE: Corsair, it-
CROSSBONE: It's- a little
CROSSBONE: dark for lunchtime
CROSSBONE: Right?
CORSAIR: Sh.
CORSAIR: Get on guard.

She flicks her scepter out, spinning it in her claw to a ready position.

You immediately reach for your hatchet, a low, strained beep escaping you as a distorted giggle echoes.

You are in a circular clearing.

Why hadn't you noticed before?

Why hadn't you noticed it getting dark?

What was-

What a cute backstory!

Corsair takes a deep breath.

Her scepter raises,
glowing with gorgeous hues; like nothing you've ever seen.
Buzzing like neon.

She twirls it gently, in a sweeping motion.

Then, flicks it to the side.

A flash of light emanates from not too far away in the woods.

Something rushes towards them both,
before redirecting to not far in front of them in the clearing.

A

giant, floating white glove
holds a figure up by their collar, floating not far off the ground.

Her eyes open again.

CORSAIR: So that's you, huh?
CORSAIR: I pictured somethin' different.
CORSAIR: Talk.

The figure is cloaked, but

clearly toy scale, hands on their hips and visibly annoyed from posture alone.

????: Don't you know it's rude to scruff somebody like that?
????: Figures!

A tail lashes under their robe.

????: You just see me as a kitten, don't you?

Their tone is mocking, a spiteful mimicry of a petulant child.

????: Ohhh, poor me.
????: Caught by some outsider who doesn't even know what they're dealing with...
????: I'd put me down if I were you.

The laughter leaves their voice.

????: You're in my woods, after all.

Corsair grimaces.

CORSAIR: . . .
CORSAIR: ..."kitten"?
CORSAIR: ...nah, not really.
CORSAIR: But you're not much of a threat to Me, at least.

The cowboy tilts her head back to you.

CORSAIR: Here.
CORSAIR: Caught your curse user.
CORSAIR: Careful; bite might be worse than the bark.
CORSAIR: But you got anything to say-

The hand deliberately dangles them about.

CORSAIR: -here's your chance.
????: OH YEAH
????: SURE! GO AHEAD

They make a loud indignant hiss, tail lashing more and more.

????: """"CURSE"""""
????: """""""""""""""USER""""""""""""""""
????: DO YOU PEOPLE EVEN HEAR YOURSELVES
????: HA!
????: You're eating up that rich, juicy-
????:
~Narrative~
????: Like it's the finest cut of silicone beef!
????: Ohhh, you're SO big and scary.
????: I bet you believe in magic elves that put fresh batteries under your pillows, too!

um

????: Good ol' narrative!
????: Lead you right to me, I'm sure!

um

CORSAIR: . . .
CORSAIR: ...Uh-huh.

She yawns.

To Vortex's then, I guess. Hopefully it's a little more cooperative.

"...So... Not to be rude or intrusive or anything, but you really don't have anything else? No jobs or hobbies or anything like that? Just... a funky stick and a cool hat?"
Posted by skinstealer - 10-23-2025, 10:10 PM
CROSSBONE: I-
CROSSBONE: That's not-

An irritated beep bursts out of you as your pixel character wiggles in unmasked annoyance.

CROSSBONE: How do you expect me to know anything if you won't tell me!
CROSSBONE: You're- you're not being fair!

Your keychain tail lashes, Snicker's brows raising as it makes imprints in the snow.

CROSSBONE: You tell ME about the curse user!
CROSSBONE: YOU'RE the one on guard!
CROSSBONE: Where do they show up!
CROSSBONE: When do they show up!
CROSSBONE: Who's targeted, where do they go after?!
CROSSBONE: If you're so much smarter than me-
CROSSBONE: Then surely YOU know that!

Snicker keeps her eyes trained on you-

-before laughing, a mechanical barking sound.

SNICKER: Finally! She has some guts!
SNICKER: City girl can speak with her whole chest after all!

...she's...not mad?

SNICKER: Sure.

oh

SNICKER: I'll fill you in.

ok

SNICKER: I'm the guard most days, yeah.
SNICKER: Vortex does just as much, but it's better suited for going out on rounds.
SNICKER: Thing's practically a monster itself.

She can't help but chuckle to herself, and not particularly kindly.

Corsair is simply staring at Snicker at this point, but she just seems to look tired more than anything.

SNICKER: So, I don't see a lot of this shit directly.
SNICKER: But I go out on hunts when it's necessary- and unfortunately that means cleanup duty.
CROSSBONE: ...c...cleanup?
SNICKER: I handle the bodies.

You feel your circuits short for a moment, the coldness to her tone making you wish you hadn't asked.

SNICKER: Sometimes they're already gone, sometimes- they wish they were.
SNICKER: I've seen toys that should have been long dead crawl around while still torn to pieces.
SNICKER: Seen a guy beg once.
SNICKER: Put him down myself.
SNICKER: ....
SNICKER: Lived down the road from the lodge.

She hesitates.

SNICKER: You asked for demographics.
SNICKER: From what I can tell, it's folks who live alone.
SNICKER: At first it was just toys who wouldn't get missed easy.
SNICKER: Outcast types.
SNICKER: Now it's the weirdos getting picked off that send more of a message.
SNICKER: Last one was already dead by the time we got there.
SNICKER: As far as I know, curse user set them up themself.
CORSAIR: . . .
CORSAIR: ...You gonna elaborate or you just waitin' for attention?
CORSAIR: We're burnin' daylight.
SNICKER: I was getting to it.
CORSAIR: Get to gettin' then.
SNICKER: They had words stitched into their chest, alright?
SNICKER: Toy got all warped up from the curse, massive.
SNICKER: Seams got ripped out of their face and their eye embroidery undone.
SNICKER: Thread got sewn back in as a message.

She opens her arms dramatically, eyes narrowing.

SNICKER: "WOE TO THE FAITHLESS".

There's no joy to it.

SNICKER: ...toy in question was a real nut. Guy named Garth.
SNICKER: Didn't believe in the narrative, would preach about it in the square.
SNICKER: Went missing one night, then some monster bodies showed up mangled in the woods.
SNICKER: Big bites taken out of them. We put two and two together.
SNICKER: Looked like the curse user let ol' Garth run around for a few nights to freak us out before maiming them and impaling them on a tree for us to find.
SNICKER: Like I said. A message.
CORSAIR: That just your guess?
CORSAIR: Any actual evidence the curse user did both?

Snicker's jaw clamps shut.

Her painted animatronic eyes roll to the side.

SNICKER: Well, either that or the swordsman.
SNICKER: Possible that freak's up to something, I guess.
SNICKER: Mange's theory is that he's the guy who strung up the body but I dunno.
SNICKER: I nicked him once with my gun and he's like.
SNICKER: Puny.
SNICKER: Which means he's fast, and he's good with that fucking sword of his-
SNICKER: But no way in hell he can lift a toy three times your size.
CORSAIR: Swordsman didn't do it.
CORSAIR: Doubt your curse user did either, but you're s'posed to be the hunter 'round here.
SNICKER: What, you fraternizing with the guy or something?
CORSAIR: Are you?
CORSAIR: Seems pretty stupid not to talk to someone you think might've had somethin' to do with all this.
CORSAIR: ...Not that you're a detective. You're more interested in killin' things, right?
CORSAIR: Or just cleanin' up bodies?
CORSAIR: Guess that's a lot easier than doin' anything about any of this, right?
SNICKER: Sheesh, who pissed in your cereal today?
SNICKER: Was a simple question!

She rolls her eyes.

Corsair leans her scepter to the side, pointing at you.

CORSAIR: Go ahead.

You have been frozen to the spot.

CROSSBONE: U-uh

CROSSBONE: Well

CROSSBONE: T-that's still-

CROSSBONE: That was only one of my questions.
SNICKER: ...right.
SNICKER: You wanted to know places.
SNICKER: Not my forte. Like I said, I'm the guy at the gate.
SNICKER: The times I get out there, it's because it's been made my fucking problem.
SNICKER: Vortex'd know better than me.
SNICKER: ...there, you know what?
SNICKER: That's my suggestion.
SNICKER: Go pester it in its shack.
SNICKER: Bout an hour's walk outside the wall.

...all that to go get told to ask somebody else...

You do your best to avoid looking stupid.

CROSSBONE: Th. Thank you for the help.
SNICKER: Yeah, yeah.
SNICKER: Take your keychain ass and your chaperone and start moving.
SNICKER: Sun goes down quicker than you'd expect.
CROSSBONE: ...it's morning.
SNICKER: Maybe where you come from, but out here- narrative packs a nasty sting.

She reaches for the crank at her side, raising the metal gate-

SNICKER: Go on. Get outta here.

-the only thing ahead of you looking like long stretches of snow and trees.

Zero signage at all.

CORSAIR: Uh-huh.

Corsair leans her scepter on her shoulder and steps through the open gate.

CORSAIR: You lock us out on the way back, and I'll bust the gate down.

She gives a wave, not looking in Snicker's direction.

SNICKER: What, and deal with your friends pitchin' a fit?
SNICKER: Noooo thank you!

You quickly catch up behind her-

And then the gate closes.

CORSAIR: . . .
CORSAIR: ...Sorry 'bout that.
CORSAIR: Pissed me off.
CROSSBONE: No, it's-
CROSSBONE: ...
CROSSBONE: You did good.

She gives the slightest of shrugs.

CORSAIR: Got info, at least.
CORSAIR: Which is that: she doesn't know what the hell she's doin', and she's got no info.

The snake rubs her face.

CORSAIR: Sooner I'm outta this hellhole, th' better.
CROSSBONE: ...yeah.
CROSSBONE: I...
CROSSBONE: This isn't really what I expected either.
CORSAIR: ...You just wanna get cursed, then you're gone, right?
CROSSBONE: I mean, yeah, that's the plan-
CORSAIR: Good.
CORSAIR: Place ain't safe.
CROSSBONE: ...
CROSSBONE: Then why...

You shake your head.

CROSSBONE: Sorry. Nosy.
CORSAIR: I'd rather you just ask it.
CROSSBONE: ...why are you sticking around, then?
CORSAIR: ...Not dangerous for me.
CORSAIR: And y'all need help while you're here, right?
CROSSBONE: But-
CROSSBONE: You didn't even know us before last night.
CORSAIR: . . .
CORSAIR: ...haven't been here long.
CORSAIR: ...but you want an actual answer, right?

You nod a little.

She's ahead of you, not looking in your direction.

But it seems like she can tell, somehow.

CORSAIR: . . .
CORSAIR: Helpin' y'all out beats what I was doin' before.
CROSSBONE: ....what are you gonna do after, then?

She rubs her chin with a thumb, then shrugs.

CORSAIR: ...Probably... same as before.
CORSAIR: Got nothin' else.

CORSAIR: . . .

CORSAIR: This place was just s'posed to be a pit stop.
CORSAIR: Met Tim, knew I couldn't just up n' leave til y'all did.
CORSAIR: Wanna help... and I'm still curious.

She raises her scepter a few inches and taps it, showing it to you.

The colors catch your eye.

CORSAIR: It's reactin' still, to all five of you; some more than others, but all of ya just the same.
CORSAIR: Can't exactly put that mystery down, can I?

CORSAIR: ...Not like I had much of a plan, anyway.

It's hard to have a proper game plan when we know pretty much nothing about the person laying curses in the first place. Do they strike at specific times? Is there a certain demographic of toy they're more likely to go after? What spots specifically do they lurk in? Any or all of those factors could impact how we plan on encountering this person.

We're most likely going to need to get Cross cursed before we try and deal with the cursegiver, since they're probably not going to want to do us any favors after we announce our intentions to apprehend them. It would make the most sense for Cross to go in alone and for Corsair to follow behind from a safe distance. Once Cross gets zapped, Corsair can move in, locate the cursey guy, and deal with them.

As for how we plan to keep Cross sane... Again, this is completely new information to us, so we didn't really have a plan for that at all. My assumption, though, is that none of the other people who got transformed went into the forest with the explicit intention of being transformed, so hopefully that will give Cross a bit of an advantage in that department. If not, she'll still be out in the middle of the forest, so we can scramble the rest of the group to try and calm her down before she gets to the village and Snicker has to... y'know.

If nothing else, I'm banking on the fact that Cross losing herself would be a pretty shitty ending to a love story that the narrative has already invested a lot of time and effort into.

CROSSBONE: ....

Shit. I really have to- I have to be careful, but- maybe she already knows a good bit. I could  be vague!

CROSSBONE: I mean. That's what I'm here for.
CROSSBONE: B-becoming a monster.
SNICKER: Uh huh.

She stares at you.

CROSSBONE: A-and I want to get iit done as quickly and quietly as possible.
SNICKER: Uhhh huh.

The animatronic is not taking the bait.

SNICKER: That it?
SNICKER: That your whole plan?
SNICKER: Damn.
SNICKER: Here I thought city folks'd be smarter than us lowly rural hicks.

She makes a spitting sound, the intent obvious even without any saliva involved.

You try and fail not to flinch.

SNICKER: Clearly you don't know what you're working with.
SNICKER: So lemme lay what you're missing out flat, and you get one more try.
SNICKER: We've got somebody running around turning people into monsters.
SNICKER: So far, not a single damn one has stayed sane.
SNICKER: Every one of them had to be put down before they killed somebody.
SNICKER: Mange's orders.
SNICKER: So even if you find the prick doing this to our village, you need a way to not become a liability.
SNICKER: Otherwise, you're gonna get a shotgun blast directly-

She points to your screen face.

SNICKER: Riiight there.

Corsair grabs Snicker's wrist, yanking her over to face the snake instead.

CORSAIR: I already warned you.
CORSAIR: You're not gonna touch her again, you hear me?
CORSAIR: Nod your head.

Her grip tightens, staring Snicker down.

Snicker bares her teeth for a moment, her eyelids shifting into their angry state just as briefly-

-before she yanks her hand away.

SNICKER: Sure.

The nod she gives is exaggerated, a little huff escaping.

SNICKER: I won't lay a claw on her unless she starts disemboweling toys.
SNICKER: You want to prevent that?
SNICKER: Do a good job.
SNICKER: Got it?
CORSAIR: I'm handling it.
CORSAIR: Why don't you play nice n' tell her what she wants to know, so we can move on already?
SNICKER: Well, she's gotta try one more time before I know what she wants.
SNICKER: You go in all cocky like this?
SNICKER: You don't even know anything about the little shit causing this mess.
SNICKER: At this rate I'd doubt you know anything about curses, even.
SNICKER: So, one more time.
SNICKER: If you're still planning on doing this, I'm gonna need more specific info if you want any help.
SNICKER: Otherwise, I'm letting you risk getting blasted into plastic shards help-free.

If you want to get information from Snicker, you will need to have a plan.
Choosing to not elaborate is also an option, but you will not receive information.
Posted by knux400 - 08-10-2025, 01:47 AM
Well. It seems like Snicker at least partially knows what's up already, so may as well be direct without offering too much extra information.

Just say you're going out for "the monster thing" (or something brief like that) and change the subject to getting it done as quickly and quietly as possible. Only give details if pressed.

CROSSBONE: ...um
CROSSBONE: so
CROSSBONE: hm

Think, think-

CROSSBONE: You know this place, r-right?
CORSAIR: Yep.
CROSSBONE: Prrrretty well?
CROSSBONE: A-and it's-
CROSSBONE: It's woods.
CROSSBONE: Obviously we um
CROSSBONE: The ragmirror.
CROSSBONE: Handled that.
CORSAIR: More or less.
CORSAIR: ...You good?
CROSSBONE: Yeah, yeah!
CROSSBONE: Just-
CROSSBONE: N.
CROSSBONE: Words aren't-

You wring your hands.

CROSSBONE: ...sorry. I'm kind of a mess with-
CROSSBONE: With new people.
CROSSBONE: Small talk and all.
CROSSBONE: B-but you do know things, and that's- I want to learn.
CORSAIR: We don't gotta talk.
CORSAIR: ...But if you have questions. Up t'you I guess.

You take a moment before nodding.

CROSSBONE: R-right. To the point then.
CROSSBONE: We found this-
CROSSBONE: It looked like a little car, weasel, thing-

You open your hands about as large as you remember.

CROSSBONE: About...this big.
CROSSBONE: It doesn't seem to have followed us back, and I can't blame it after the fight...
CROSSBONE: ...but I don't know much about them.
CROSSBONE: And-
CROSSBONE: I hope it's okay.
CORSAIR: Hell wyrms.
CORSAIR: If you don't antagonize 'em, they're mostly harmless.
CORSAIR: Usually a bit bigger than that, at least. Sometimes much bigger.
CORSAIR: The biggest are... leaders, I guess you'd say. And the little ones stay with 'em. Makes a whole convoy of 'em together.
CORSAIR: ...Might not believe it given how they can be, but some of the smaller ones get kept as pets. Domesticated.
CORSAIR: May see a few of those in town, but they're not popular here.
CORSAIR: I've heard of some strays around nearby.
CORSAIR: Could've been part of a convoy and somethin' happened, or maybe they're domesticated wyrms that ended up as strays.
CORSAIR: That's probably what ya ran into.
CORSAIR: ...They steal from people travelin' sometimes. Probably thought ya had food.

Your pixel character can't help but make a nervous shimmy.

CROSSBONE: There were snacks involved.
CORSAIR: That'd do it.
CORSAIR: Probably just wanted food.
CROSSBONE: Oh...
CROSSBONE: Is it...hungry on its own, then?
CROSSBONE: Is it not eating well...?
CORSAIR: Could be. Couldn't tell ya.
CORSAIR: It's cold out. Food's scarce. And it was alone instead of havin' a convoy to provide for it.
CORSAIR: Might've been hungry, might've wanted the safety in numbers. That kinda thing.
CORSAIR: Who knows.

CROSSBONE: ....

CROSSBONE: ...............

CROSSBONE: You said they can be domesticated?
CORSAIR: Yep.
CROSSBONE: Eeeeasily?
CORSAIR: ...You got a plan in mind?
CROSSBONE: Just.
CROSSBONE: If it came back-
CROSSBONE: And it *needed* food-
CORSAIR: Depends on how tame it is, I'd say.
CORSAIR: You lookin' for a pet?
CROSSBONE: More of...
CROSSBONE: ....support animal.
CROSSBONE: B-but if that's silly-
CORSAIR: For you?
CROSSBONE: *no*, but-
CORSAIR: Roulette?
CROSSBONE: maybe
CORSAIR: ...Don't think it's a bad idea.
CORSAIR: But didn't it run off?
CROSSBONE: Yeah...
CROSSBONE: ...guess it's a pipedream.
CORSAIR: Never know.

She turns her head just enough to glance over at you, but makes no further comment.

CROSSBONE: ....
CROSSBONE: yeah
CROSSBONE: I'll...think about it.
CROSSBONE: ....

You glance around, letting out a soft beep as you notice rustling in one of the nearby trees- nothing large, but-

CROSSBONE: ...does this place have small...animals?
CORSAIR: Mhm.
CORSAIR: Got these plastic-lookin' spirals, gummy bugs, even some eyeballs that bounce around on their own.

The snake rubs her shoulder, looking somewhat nervous.

CORSAIR: ...Why you askin'?
CORSAIR: You scoutin' for Scout?
CROSSBONE: O-oh, just-

hope i didnt offend

You point at the trees, some rustling still going.

CORSAIR: ...Yep. That's animals.
CORSAIR: ...I'm not much of a tour guide, y'know.
CROSSBONE: R-RIGHT
CROSSBONE: sorry
CROSSBONE: ...
CORSAIR: Nothin' to apologize for.
CORSAIR: ...I'm not much for small talk, either.
CORSAIR: Nearly at the gate, anyway.

You snap your head to attention.

Sure enough, a massive wall of wooden stacking logs lays ahead, a structure in your direct path.

It looks...scratched up and stained, having clearly seen better days, but incredibly sturdy.

A metal gate- actual metal from the look of it, not plastic...and god, *old* too- is built into the frame, clearly custom fastened for a secure fit.

You can't help but feel somewhat awestruck by it. Actual metal architecture, such a rarity in the city-

Corsair lets you marvel at the metal, while she approaches the guard leaning by the gate.

CORSAIR: Mornin', Snicker.

The cowboy nods back in your direction.

CORSAIR: She's with me.

Snicker lets out a-

....mechanical *snore*, before snapping awake with an animatronic CHUNK.

Her eyes snap open, jaw gnashing a few times- you really, really do not like the look of those teeth, even if you desperately try to assure yourself she's just...getting her bearings.

Sure enough, her tone is cordial.

SNICKER: Kinda early, ain't it?
SNICKER: Y'all goin' for a stroll?
CORSAIR: Mhm. Out n' about.
CORSAIR: Don't worry, I can handle it.

She grins, hefting the scepter up onto her shoulder.

SNICKER: Of course, yeah.

You look over at Corsair, hoping your confusion is more discrete than it feels.

CORSAIR: ...You all ready, Cross?
CROSSBONE: Yes, yeah, y-
SNICKER: Now hold on...
SNICKER: Corsair.
SNICKER: Mange has got his eye on this one.
SNICKER: I'm on orders to watch her. Suspicious activity.

The cowboy steps to the side, blocking Snicker's view of you.

CORSAIR: Crossbone's fine.
CORSAIR: She's with me. Nothin' to worry ab-
CROSSBONE: I!
CROSSBONE: I mean you no trouble-!

You bow, hard enough to make your keychain tail rattle.

CROSSBONE: I'm aware I'm causing a lot of stress but I just want to get this done
SNICKER: uh
CROSSBONE: and get what i need and go home with my friends so i will try
SNICKER: Uh
CROSSBONE: to get out of your hair very very soon!

Snicker's scary mouth clamps shut, shocked.

CROSSBONE: A-and if there's anything I can get you while I'm out there I can do my best!

what the fuck why did i OFFER THAT

CORSAIR: . . .
CORSAIR: ...uh-huh.
CORSAIR: So there ya go.
SNICKER: I-
SNICKER: Hey, buddy, I'm-
SNICKER: cant tell whether to be flattered or if this is weird sheesh
SNICKER: I'm a hunter, okay?

She grabs you by a horn with her massive paw and yanks you upright, getting a surprised chirp.

The cowboy instantly pulls Snicker's hand off of you.

CORSAIR: Watch it.
CROSSBONE: nonono its ok

Snicker nearly shifts to the manic, teeth bared state-

Before slowly grinding her gears back down, pulling her hand out of Corsair's gently.

SNICKER: Not a lord or whatever the hell you seem to think I am.
SNICKER: And I don't need a new errand girl when I don't know what you can even do.
SNICKER: Last time I trusted a stranger with shit we needed done here, Mange tore me a new one.
CROSSBONE: oh
SNICKER: Oh for- Don't look so damn sad!
CROSSBONE: I just-
SNICKER: You want to help make this easier?
SNICKER: Sure. We can do that.
SNICKER: I have-

She slaps the gate wall.

SNICKER: SO MUCH stupid ass paperwork to deal with today.
SNICKER: And I do not need to be tailing a suicidal keychain pet-

The words sting.

SNICKER: -looking to become a monster.
SNICKER: You tell me what you're gonna do, and I'll tell you the fastest way I'd do it.

She glances over at Corsair.

SNICKER: And she'll be your chaperone.

Corsair's grip tightens around the scepter, her wooden claw nearly balling into a fist.
She's staring daggers, though Snicker doesn't seem to notice at all.
The snake says nothing, regardless.

You have the floor.

...and Snicker has the information.
Picking your words could get you some important clues.

So... What other kinds of critters live around here? I mean, obviously we've met the ragmirror, but what about other, smaller, safer stuff?

...You ever see these, like, little weasel-y guys?
Posted by skinstealer - 07-21-2025, 03:31 AM
You are now in control of Crossbone.

You're doing a good job of looking upbeat, you think. Excited. Ready to get cursed!

Yeah!

Your battery panel itches around the seams, something you try to shove out of your mind.

Everything's packed to go, and thankfully, your supplies and belongings are way more intact than you thought. The only main loss was your food supplies and some bandages, but your hatchet is safe and looking good to go.

....you'd rather not think about how the plastic has a permanent-looking black stain, though. It did sink into that thing's eye, but....

Focus.

CROSSBONE: You good to go, Corsair?

Corsair seems to be carrying nothing in particular, other than that scepter of hers.

CORSAIR: Good as I'll ever be.
CROSSBONE: Good.
CROSSBONE: ....

You look over your shoulder at the intensive care unit.

CROSSBONE: ...I just have one more thing to do myself.
CORSAIR: Take your time.

Her scepter suddenly pulls her arm that direction as well, but the cowboy yanks it back just as quickly.

You let out a soft, inquisitive beep.

CROSSBONE: Why's it doing that?
CORSAIR: ...hm?
CORSAIR:  . . .
CORSAIR: Scepter's just drawn to certain things, certain people.
CORSAIR: Part of how the magic works. Nothin' to worry about.

You feel a slight sense of unease.

CROSSBONE: ...if...you say so-

The ICU's door opens, getting you to snap to attention as Guthrie steps into view.

GUTHRIE: Hello hello, good morning!

The blanket plush claps her flap-like paws together, no sound made at all.

GUTHRIE: Thought I heard folks up and about!
CROSSBONE: ...Is-
GUTHRIE: We're stable!
GUTHRIE: It was a rough time of it, but it should be out of the woods.

Scout immediately perks up.

SCOUT: It's going to be okay?!
POLKA DOT: Thank god..
GUTHRIE: Mhm, but it's still in bad shape.
GUTHRIE: I should be able to get it up and running better soon, but it will still take time and rest.
GUTHRIE: Likely a week, by my estimate. Full bedrest.
GUTHRIE: I don't get a lot of electronic toys, but...
GUTHRIE: ...that's the best I can give you.
GUTHRIE: So, for now- one visitor at a time, keep it low key.
TIMOTHY: Should be doable...
TIMOTHY: ...and it'll be fine while we're out?
GUTHRIE: Oh, yes.
GUTHRIE: I'll be checking in regularly.
SCOUT: Well...I want to check in, but-

He looks down at the mess of supplies burying his lap.

SCOUT: ...gonna need a sec.
SCOUT: Anyone else want to go first?
CROSSBONE: ....

You remember carrying Roulette's frozen, broken down body.

How terrified you felt.

The fear that it might not have woken up, that you've been suffocating for the sake of the others' worry-

...and that you did not do enough.

CROSSBONE: I'll go.

Guthrie makes room for you, every step feeling heavy  as you make your way inside.

You find Roulette half-curled up in the small room, curtains still drawn by the window.

It still doesn't look good at all, but you do your best not to think about that
Its aperture is very slightly open, but it's sleeping, as far as you can tell; its chest rising and falling with simulated breath.

It's hard to look at in this state.

Something about it makes you feel sick.

It's hard to keep yourself in the room any longer.

I-
I should-
I should say something I should-

CROSSBONE: stay safe please

And you are immediately out of there.

Corsair meets you at the far end of the room once you gather your things to go.

CORSAIR: Get what ya came for?
CROSSBONE: ...mm.
CROSSBONE: Let's go.

You are desperate to get this shit out of your head, and thankfully, leaving the room for the first time as a conscious individual gives you plenty of new things to worry about.

CROSSBONE: What on-

The lodge halls may be empty of people, but the trophy heads on the walls certainly do a good job of staring.

CROSSBONE: ....
CROSSBONE: Th-
CROSSBONE: Those are monsters, right?
CORSAIR: ...Not worth thinkin' about too hard.

Corsair takes the lead, quickly exiting the lodge.

The cowboy keeps a leisurely pace, enjoying the morning air as she makes her way gradually towards the town gate.

You, on the other hand-

Your coat's still fine, Fine, it's fine, it's here and it's warm, but you swear on your life that the light scratches in the material have dropped the temperature down. Surely.

You do not fucking like the cold.

CROSSBONE: S-so, um!
CROSSBONE: You know the area?
CORSAIR: More or less.
CORSAIR: Been here a lil while.
CORSAIR: ...Y'sure you don't need an extra layer?

She glances back to you, noting your scratched-up coat.

CROSSBONE:  I!
CROSSBONE: It's not like I can buy something new-
CORSAIR: Y'all didn't bring any supply funds for when ya got here?
CROSSBONE: I mean, sure, but-
CROSSBONE: ...no idea if the money's even good here.

Embarrassment sets in.

She shrugs.

CORSAIR: Worth a shot if that coat's not cuttin' it.

The cowboy turns her head forward once more.

CORSAIR: ...But I get the feelin' you wanna keep movin' on.
CORSAIR: All the same to me.
CORSAIR: Just may wanna think about stockin' up later. Gets cold at night, here.

You can feel your circuits fizzling.

You have no idea how to talk to strangers on a good day.

But conversation is important, right?

This is not going to be easy.

Seconding Cross/Corsair! The forest sounds like the most immediately dangerous place, plus we (the audience) haven't seen much of Corsair yet, so spending more time with her would be fun.

(ooh, very very cool stuff going on very very wonderful update.)

Voting for Cross and Corsair, that seems like it'll be the most fascinating to have a lil pull in.

POLKA DOT: So, like...
POLKA DOT: The. Staff thing.

You point to the magical scepter, keeping your eyes off of the orb.

CORSAIR: Don't know if I can answer everything ya wanna know.
POLKA DOT: More just...concerned.
POLKA DOT: Something weird about the ball on top.
CORSAIR: It's magic.
CORSAIR: All magic's weird.
CORSAIR: Don't worry about it too much.

The colors are mesmerizing.

Swirling, drifting about in the scepter's crystal.

Until Corsair moves it around to the other side of herself, blocking it from view.

CORSAIR: ...Magic's enticing.
POLKA DOT: You sure that shouldn't be covered up?
CORSAIR: Usually not this strong.
CORSAIR: Just don't stare at it.
POLKA DOT: ...usually?
POLKA DOT: What makes our bunch so special?
CORSAIR:  . . .
CORSAIR: ...Part of what I'm tryin' to figure out, if I'm bein' honest.
CORSAIR: Can't really say more'n that.
You pull back, unsure what to make of that.

Narrative, maybe.

...annoying.

POLKA DOT: As long as you're not gonna hypnotize anybody.
CORSAIR: ...Not how it works.
CORSAIR: Not that I'd do that, anyway.
POLKA DOT: ...mm.

Tim trusts her.
That'll be good for now.

Your attention's caught by hearing the dog in question in a conversation with Scout- a distressed one, from the sound of it.

TIMOTHY: I- I don't know if we can risk it.
SCOUT: It's...god, I know, but-
POLKA DOT: Everything alright, guys?

You approach carefully-

Seeing that the two of them are staring at the space between their cots.

TIMOTHY: ...

He refuses to look at either you or Scout.

SCOUT: ....
SCOUT: We were going to try and move our beds together.
POLKA DOT: Not a bad ide-
TIMOTHY: It's a terrible idea!

It hits you that he's on the verge of tearing up, his voice strained.

TIMOTHY: I-
TIMOTHY: I don't want them hurting Scout...
CORSAIR:  . . .
CORSAIR: ...You could.
CORSAIR: If they give ya trouble, call for me.
POLKA DOT: ....
POLKA DOT: If you raise a fuss on our behalf-
CROSSBONE: Won't they kick all of us out?
CORSAIR: Y'all let Me handle that.
CROSSBONE: That's-

She looks conflicted.

CROSSBONE: I'll...leave it up to Tim and Scout.
POLKA DOT: Not willing to test it with you and me?

Cross lets out a shy beep, rubbing her elbow.

CROSSBONE: It's tempting...
POLKA DOT: ...nervous though, huh?
CROSSBONE: Mhm...
POLKA DOT: Tell you what-

You walk over to sift through your pack, trying to find something-

-pulling out an admittedly wrecked-looking pom pom hat.

POLKA DOT: You can snuggle my hat tonight.
CROSSBONE: E-eh? I mean-
CROSSBONE: That's so sweet...
POLKA DOT: We'll see how Corsair does, and if it goes okay, we get to scoot beds tomorrow.
POLKA DOT: Sound good?

Cross does her characteristic pixel wiggle before taking your hat, holding it to her chest and settling down in bed.

CROSSBONE: ...thanks, Polka.

You feel that warm glow in your chest, pleasantly familiar.

POLKA DOT: You got it.
SCOUT: Well! That settles it.

The bear looks over at Tim.

SCOUT: Get scooting.
TIMOTHY: Pff-
TIMOTHY: Alright, alright...

They turn to their gay endeavors, leaving you and Corsair again.

POLKA DOT: You can take one of the beds, then.
POLKA DOT: ...and protect us from the guild.
CORSAIR: Well. If y'all need me, say somethin'.
CORSAIR: Gonna lay here and if I fall asleep, I fall asleep.

She steps over and flops into the empty bed next to Tim, only to wince.
The cowboy's scepter glows for a moment, and she grimaces, before dropping it onto the floor next to the wall.

CORSAIR: ...should've known a hospital bed would be hard as a rock. Hell...

With a sigh, she removes her poncho.

CORSAIR: Y'all headin' to bed soon?
CORSAIR: What's the plan, here?
POLKA DOT: I...I dunno.
CROSSBONE: I know I'm tired, at least...
SCOUT: Not me.

Tim shoots him a look, the bear snuggled up to him so thoroughly that they looked like two  heads sticking out of the shared blanket.

SCOUT: Now I'm in sleepover mode.

Once her poncho is off, the snake sprawls out with a big stretch,
keeping her hat resting over her face to block the light.

TIMOTHY: We should really let her sleep...

His voice is a whisper.

CORSAIR: Tim, you're about four feet away from me. Heard ya.
CORSAIR: Besides, not passin' out right this second.
CORSAIR: Need somethin'?
TIMOTHY: N-no, just!
TIMOTHY: ...I want to be respectful.
CORSAIR: You're worryin' too much.
CORSAIR: If I got a problem I'll say somethin'.
TIMOTHY: ...right.
TIMOTHY: Sorry.

He sighs before allowing himself to rest on Scout's shoulder, trying not to look embarrassed.

SCOUT: See? It's good.
SCOUT: ...besides, I haven't actually got any proper time to get to know anybody but Tim!
SCOUT: I get to use my actual name and everything!
CROSSBONE: ...It is nice....
CROSSBONE: I...feel bad that we didn't get all that much time with Fatale.
CROSSBONE: Or, I- Lickety, Corsair said.
CROSSBONE: S. Sorry.
SCOUT: ...heh.

He can't help but laugh, not particularly happily.

SCOUT: Trust me, I'm...not happy either.
SCOUT: Not about that.
SCOUT: ....
SCOUT: You worried about us?

Cross nods, avoiding looking at his face.

SCOUT: ....me too.
SCOUT: It- didn't use to  be like this.
SCOUT: I don't know if it'll ever be the same.
SCOUT: Devo didn't even-
SCOUT: ...didn't even remember.

Corsair is glancing in Scout's direction from under the brim of her hat.

Though, only Tim notices.
He tries not to look obvious, maintaining his current expression.

TIMOTHY: We'll- we'll find a way.
TIMOTHY: And we'll all get to spend time together.
SCOUT: ....can't be sayin' stuff like that, Tim.
TIMOTHY: E-eh?

He panics, ears flopping up as the bear leans on him dramatically.

SCOUT: Or I'll fall for you SO horribly that I'll PERISH

The cowboy grins, but it's gone just as quickly as it appears.
Tim unclenches at that, allowing the bear this  moment of respite.

POLKA DOT: ....

Theyre sweet....
.....

A flash of Lickety's rage-filled face in your mind, splattered with tar.

.....
I can't blame Cross for being worried for him.

Almost as if she could hear you, she reaches for your wing-

-the character on her face making a sleepy expression.

POLKA DOT: ....too tired for slumber party?
CROSSBONE: Uh huh....
POLKA DOT: You heard her, then. I'm turning in.
SCOUT: Aww.
POLKA DOT: You two can have fun staying up all night if you use your damn inside voices.
SCOUT: Aye aye, cap'n.
TIMOTHY: ....gnight, Ribbon.

You smile, aware how exhausted it looks on your face, before tucking Cross in and laying back in your own bed.

....Corsair wasn't kidding. This bed is awful.

Wow.

Ceiling is unfamiliar, too.
Have you even slept in a room that WASN'T yours or Cross' at Laurie's before this whole mess? Surely-

Toy store, sure, but-

It's

probably not a huge deal

people do sleepovers all the time

POLKA DOT: What are you doing?

Cross looks up, uncorking a large nail polish remover bottle. The cap is the size of her entire  hand, the brush as big as her forearm.

The liquid drips, a sense of trepidation filling your chest. You don't like it.

CROSSBONE: I have to take off the bad paint.
POLKA DOT: ...What-?

She lowers it to her arm, making a pained beep as it eats at the skull-shaped paint markings there.

POLKA DOT: WhOA WHOA WHOA
POLKA DOT: B-babe, don't-

You try to grab her arm, the plastic crumbling at the touch. You reel back, letting out a terrified squeak-

When you look up, a black liquid "crack" appears to have materialized on her screen, spreading slowly.

CROSSBONE: It's a defective job.
CROSSBONE: Chipped it in the packaging.
CROSSBONE: Now no one will take me home.
POLKA DOT: That's- what-

A pixel goes dead, and then another.

CROSSBONE: If I start fresh, I gain more retail value.
CROSSBONE: People love a custom job.
POLKA DOT: Cross, snap out of it-!!

A horrible, dull beep can be heard in the back of your mind.

CROSSBONE: If I'm lucky, I'll get to be in a package deal.
POLKA DOT: CROSS PLEASE

You wake up gripping your blanket so tight you almost rip it.

CROSSBONE: Ribbon?

You blink, catching your breath.

Your girlfriend is standing there, wringing her plastic hands.

Intact, and skull-patterned hands.

POLKA DOT: Oh thank fuck.
CROSSBONE: H-huh?!

She lets out a startled beep as you wrap her in a huge hug, squeezing her hard shell as much as you could- your body denting before hers ever would.

CROSSBONE: H-hey, are you-?
POLKA DOT: Nnngh.
CROSSBONE: *polka someone could walk in*

You immediately detach, Cross looking a mix of flustered, sad the hug was over, and nervous.

CROSSBONE: ...so...
POLKA DOT: Nightmare.
CROSSBONE: I...figured.
CROSSBONE: ....are you going to  be okay?
POLKA DOT: Yeah, I-
POLKA DOT: .....

more retail value

POLKA DOT: ...yeah. We can talk about it later.
POLKA DOT: I've got plans.
CROSSBONE: ...oh?
POLKA DOT: Gutsy and Vann, they're kitchen staff-
POLKA DOT: They know somebody who might be on our side.
CROSSBONE: ...hm.
CROSSBONE: They're staff?
POLKA DOT: They don't seem to be the religious type.
CROSSBONE: ...I hope you're right.
CROSSBONE: I'd ask to come with, but-
POLKA DOT: You've got your own ideas.

She nods, chirping.

CROSSBONE: I'm going out to the woods.
CORSAIR: ...That so?

The snake's tongue flicks.

She jumps.

CROSSBONE: U-um!
CROSSBONE: Yes.
SCOUT: ...are you sure that's a good plan?

You look over, Scout rummaging through his own bag and Tim taking inventory.

CROSSBONE: ....

The virtual pet's keychain tail rattles.

CROSSBONE: I can handle it!
SCOUT: I'm! I'm not trying to imply anything-
CROSSBONE: Then where are you going.
SCOUT: Oh, the woods.
SCOUT: There's monsters out there, so-

...is that him giving justification for him going, or her staying...?

CORSAIR: I'll go with.

The cowboy is already putting her poncho back on, stretching her neck.

SCOUT: Oh!
SCOUT: Cool!
POLKA DOT: Uh-

You lean in to whisper to Cross.

POLKA DOT: You good with that? She's a stranger.
CROSSBONE: ...It'll be a good gauge of how earnest she is.
CROSSBONE: I'll be careful.

You feel a slight twist in your belly, but-

POLKA DOT: I trust you.
POLKA DOT: ....both of you.
POLKA DOT: Don't fuck that up.
CORSAIR: Not gonna.
CORSAIR: Don't worry so much.

The snake stands, snagging her scepter from the floor.
She nods towards Scout and Tim.

CORSAIR: You two got plans for the day, then?

Tim finally looks up from his sorting.

TIMOTHY: We wanted to look around the outskirts of town- still in the walls, ideally.
SCOUT: Got a good feeling about it!
CORSAIR: ...huh.

The snake tilts her head to the side, tapping her scepter against her shoulder.

CORSAIR: ...On the east side of town, head far out into the outskirts.
CORSAIR: Look for a tent. Might be signs of somebody living out there near it to help you find it.
TIMOTHY: ...what's the-
SCOUT: An ADVENTURE!
CORSAIR: So.
CORSAIR: We all got plans.

You may now pick which party members to control.
All routes will  be fully and equally revealed at some point in the future, but you will only be able to control One.

ROUTES:
Polka
Scout + Tim
Corsair + Cross

If you're concerned about people getting accidentally hypnotized or whatever by the scepter why not put a cap on it? Or does it need line of sight to do it's psychic nonsense?
Posted by skinstealer - 12-16-2024, 10:03 AM
POLKA DOT: Oh, man. Like-
POLKA DOT: Like never?
VANN: Um...no.
VANN: Gutsy either.
POLKA DOT: ...have...either of you tried?

Vann freezes, unsure what to say.

VANN: I-I mean-
VANN: Gutsy, maybe, but-
VANN: I...it's not for me.
VANN: This, you know-
VANN: It's the life I've got.
POLKA DOT: ...you don't sound super happy about that.
VANN: The cards are d-dealt the way they're dealt, you know?

She gives what is very clearly a forced embroidered smile.

POLKA DOT: You're kind of a shit liar, cmon.

And then deflates, giving you a tired, defeated look.

VANN: Even if I did want to leave- and I'm not saying I do!
VANN: ...there's not really options for me out there.
VANN: Like- what do you do?
POLKA DOT: Me? Well...

You strike a pose, leaning your wing onto the table.

POLKA DOT: I do lots of things.
POLKA DOT: For my day job? I'm a chef like Gutsy.

She drops her voice down, nice and quiet.

VANN: are you better at cooking than-
POLKA DOT: ...judging by the cider? Yeah.

You startle at the pleading look in her glass eyes.

POLKA DOT: Dude, that does not mean I'm staying.
VANN: Ah....
VANN: Well...a nice thought, I suppose.
POLKA DOT: Maybe you should just focus on getting out yourself, then.
POLKA DOT: What I'm saying- is that jobs like you have here, are ones you can get where I'm from.
POLKA DOT: Place I work at's also a place where people come and go from all over.

...scarily similar in that regard, but so much different...

VANN: It's...
VANN: ....nevermind.
VANN: It must be so different, even then...
VANN: Everything about you-
POLKA DOT: Eh?
VANN: -from the way you dress-
POLKA DOT: H-huh?
VANN: -to the way you talk-
POLKA DOT: C-cmon-
VANN: You're a complete outsider to what I know.

She pauses.

VANN: ...well.
VANN: Aside from Katz...
POLKA DOT: ....Katz?
VANN: My friend!

Her face lights up.

VANN: She's Gutsy and I's friend!
VANN: She talks like you...
POLKA DOT: Wait-
POLKA DOT: Is she also an out-of-towner?
VANN: Not an adventurer, but...yes.
VANN: Sometimes she talks about it, living in a big city...

Her face is tinted with pink blush, the cat rubbing the back of her head and looking sheepish all of a sudden.

VANN: ...though I probably shouldn't say too much.
VANN: P...people don't really like her, around here.
VANN: ...which makes me worried for your sake, honestly...
POLKA DOT: Where can I find her?
VANN: She's down in the residential section, Weathervane Street.
VANN: She does work for the guild as an artist, but-
VANN: ...you won't find her coming to the guild itself without a reason.
GUTSY: Hey, are we talking about Katz over here-?

The anatomy model saunters back in with a piling heap of-

...gummy...sandwiches?

POLKA DOT: Uh-
POLKA DOT: Yes?
VANN: Mm...
VANN: Silk Ribbon was curious about her.
GUTSY: Wow! A new friend for our crew, then!
VANN: I-!
GUTSY: You wouldn't believe how hard it is to find folks out here to hang out with-
VANN: Gutsy, that's- we just met her-
GUTSY: Everybody's such a damn prude!
VANN: gutsy please
GUTSY: If you're interested in Katz-!
VANN: please please shut up please
GUTSY: We'll be happy to introduce you sometime!
POLKA DOT: ...

You look between the two toys-

Gutsy, with a beaming expression on its face-

And Vann, looking panicked with wide glass eyes and faux fur standing on end.

POLKA DOT: ...how about I, uh, talk with my crew about it?
GUTSY: Sure, sure! More the merrier!
GUTSY: Shoot, we haven't had a party in years.
VANN: AND YOU REMEMBER WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME WITH THAT RIGHT
GUTSY: Relax, Vanny!
GUTSY: I'm sure our newcomer won't cause too much trouble.
GUTSY: For noooooow-!

It holds out the jiggling stack.

GUTSY: Your treasure heap, to take back to your friends!
POLKA DOT: T...thanks.
POLKA DOT: ...
POLKA DOT: Seriously.
GUTSY: No problem!
VANN: ...rest up well, Ribbon.

You get your tower of gummy sandwiches and give the two of them a nod, wobbling your way back to the room.....

TIMOTHY: Oh!
TIMOTHY: Oh, um- hm.
TIMOTHY: I think meeting the party would be good, yeah...
TIMOTHY: I'm...sure they'll really like you.

His shoulders slump a little bit.

The snake keeps her head forward as her eyes glance over.

CORSAIR: You alright?
TIMOTHY: Y..yeah-! Yeah, just-
TIMOTHY: They...could use some good news.
TIMOTHY: News of somebody helping out especially.
CORSAIR: ...you wanna explain?

He laughs, nervously.

TIMOTHY: It's been a long trip, right?
TIMOTHY: N...none of us had ever been out of the city, not like this.
TIMOTHY: Stands to reason-
TIMOTHY: Especially after we got our asses beat-
TIMOTHY: That some help would be good.

Tim's tone softens, the dog looking down at his lap.

TIMOTHY: ...sorry. I don't mean to sound so-
TIMOTHY: Agitated.
TIMOTHY: ...I'm just worried for them.

She's quiet a moment.

CORSAIR: ...Fair enough, I s'pose.
CORSAIR: But ya made it here.
CORSAIR: That's not nothin'.
TIMOTHY: B-barely, though...
TIMOTHY: They said we had to be dragged in.
CORSAIR: That's ragmirrors.
CORSAIR: Not your fault ya got unlucky.
TIMOTHY: I don't want it to be luck, though-
TIMOTHY: ...
TIMOTHY: I want to find ways to keep everybody safe.
TIMOTHY: As guaranteed as possible.
CORSAIR: Should rest up before you head back, then.
TIMOTHY: Yeah, but-
TIMOTHY: We've still...got stuff to do here.
TIMOTHY: ...and...I don't really know about the vibes here, to be honest...
CORSAIR: Like I said, if ya need me just call.
TIMOTHY: ...thanks....
TIMOTHY: You...seem confident in knowing your way around this kind of situation, at least.

She sighs and shakes her head, eyes looking up in exacerbation.

CORSAIR: More than I'd like.
TIMOTHY: ...ah.
TIMOTHY: That kind of confidence.
CORSAIR: Don't sweat it.
CORSAIR: Ancient history. Mostly.
TIMOTHY: Mostly.

Her wooden claws tap at the scepter.

TIMOTHY: I-I mean!
TIMOTHY: We don't have to talk about it.
TIMOTHY: Just...if it would help...
TIMOTHY: ...
TIMOTHY: I just need all the info I can get about what I'm in for that I can get.
CORSAIR: Wasn't talkin' about this place specifically.
TIMOTHY: ...but other cases like this.
TIMOTHY: ...I don't have to press. Sorry.
CORSAIR: Yeah, let's not.
CORSAIR: ...Just keep your head up.
CORSAIR: You'll be outta here soon enough.
TIMOTHY: Y..yeah.
TIMOTHY: ...
TIMOTHY: .......
TIMOTHY: ...hopefully without any more screw-ups.
TIMOTHY: I bungled that fight for sure, and just-
TIMOTHY: Shit.
CORSAIR: You're alive.
CORSAIR: Did fine. Don't be hard on yourself.
TIMOTHY: You weren't there to see it, though...
CORSAIR: So what happened, then?
TIMOTHY: I-

He takes a deep breath,  squeezing his eyes shut for a moment.

And then exhale.

TIMOTHY: It tracked us down the night earlier. The ragmirror.
TIMOTHY: We got separated- I fucking, tripped and got blown away.
TIMOTHY: ...the others ended up alright, that night, mostly...
TIMOTHY: ...didn't end up needing me to stay safe.
TIMOTHY: But the whole time, I wish I had the chance to even try to be there- not stuck somewhere alone and useless.
TIMOTHY: We found each other the next day, and last night we-

He stops for a moment, realizing how fast he was talking.

Another breath.

TIMOTHY: -we set up camp.
CORSAIR: Ya know you had the harder time there, right?
CORSAIR: Least they had somebody.
CORSAIR: You were alone.
TIMOTHY: ...
TIMOTHY: Maybe.
TIMOTHY: Just makes me more upset with myself, to be honest.
CORSAIR: And how's that work?
TIMOTHY: Let's say I did have a harder time.
TIMOTHY: That's just going to make everybody feel...sorry for me, or something.
TIMOTHY: If I had just been there-
CORSAIR: 'Course they're gonna be worried about you.
CORSAIR: Would you rather your friends Not care about you?
CORSAIR: Not like ya had any control over what happened, anyway, from the sound of it.
CORSAIR: So quit blamin' yourself and let people give a damn.

He blinks.

TIMOTHY: I-
TIMOTHY: Y-
TIMOTHY: ...
TIMOTHY: ..fair...
TIMOTHY: .....it's...just hard to see them worrying-
TIMOTHY: ...and hoping I can make it easier on them...
TIMOTHY: You know?
TIMOTHY: They're- they're my best friends, my partner's there, I care about them so much-
TIMOTHY: ...I just want to give them the best life I can.
TIMOTHY: That's the whole reason why we're here.
CORSAIR: Do what you can, then.
CORSAIR: And know that worryin's part of the package when ya care about someone.

The snake arches her back, stretching.

He couldn't help but laugh softly, a lot less anxious this time.

TIMOTHY: ...you're right.
TIMOTHY: I...I think-
TIMOTHY: I think it'll be a bit before I like, get that-
TIMOTHY: But. Thank you.
TIMOTHY: Maybe I should, just- do something nice or something...
CORSAIR: Somethin' nice?
TIMOTHY: Something to cheer them up, I guess.
TIMOTHY: Mood is...pretty dour over there in the infirmary.
CORSAIR: ...Hm.
CORSAIR: Got ideas?
TIMOTHY: ...I don't exactly have money that'd work here, I don't think-
TIMOTHY: At least, not on me.
TIMOTHY: So buying something's out...
TIMOTHY: Maybe just coming up with something sentimental to say...
CORSAIR: Well, you're on your own there.
CORSAIR: Never been good at that myself.
TIMOTHY: I think you're doing a pretty good job listening, at least...
TIMOTHY: ...thanks.
CORSAIR: 'Course.
CORSAIR: Not much else to do in a bar than swap stories.
TIMOTHY: Felt more like me talking your ear off, but...
TIMOTHY: You're easy to talk to, I guess.

She chuckles.

CORSAIR: Anytime, Tim.
TIMOTHY: Well, if we're going to be working together, potentially-

He trails off for a moment to gather his thoughts, eyes wandering to the snake's scepter.

Colors swirl in the crystal at the top of the scepter.
The dog finds himself transfixed

until Corsair picks it up off the table, holding it in her claw.

CORSAIR: Gonna finish that sentence? Or leave me guessin'?
TIMOTHY: S...sorry.
TIMOTHY: The- your staff-
TIMOTHY: Something about it just, draws me in.
CORSAIR: ...it'll do that.
CORSAIR: Not carryin' this thing around for nothin'.
CORSAIR: Not the kinda thing you wanna toy with.
TIMOTHY: I mean-
TIMOTHY: Is there, like, a risk for me looking at it?
CORSAIR: ...Probably not.
CORSAIR: Not right now, anyway.

She switches it to her left claw, away from Tim.

CORSAIR: Doubt y' wanna risk it when you don't know what it can do, though.
TIMOTHY: Do...I get to know what it can do?
CORSAIR: Nope.
CORSAIR: You'll see some soon enough, I reckon.
TIMOTHY: In a good way?
CORSAIR: Worried?
TIMOTHY: ...maybe.

She snickers, giving him a pat on the shoulder.

CORSAIR: You'll be fiiine.
CORSAIR: Quit worryin'.

The snake stands up with a stretch.

CORSAIR: I'm headin' out.
CORSAIR: You comin' along?
TIMOTHY: W-wait-
TIMOTHY: Where are you headed?
CORSAIR: Out.
CORSAIR: Someplace in particular y' want me?
TIMOTHY: I figured-
TIMOTHY: Maybe I could introduce you to the party! Or something-
TIMOTHY: I am pretty sure you're going to be cool by now, so...

The snake laughs; it comes out rickety, like wood clanking together.

CORSAIR: ...Sure.
CORSAIR: I can give it a try.

She twirls her staff, heading for the door.

CORSAIR: C'mon.

He hurries along, swerving around other bargoers and following close behind.

TIMOTHY: G-got it!

The crowd seems to part for her, almost supernaturally.

Soon enough, the pair reach the door; making their way out and down the steps.

CORSAIR: Any stops along the way?
TIMOTHY: I wouldn't even know what's in this lodge.
TIMOTHY: Finding here was by chance.
CORSAIR: Lead on, then.

The stairs feel especially precarious going back down, Tim trying not to get too caught up in the brief exposure to the cold air as the two of them walk back from the bar to the lodge.

Once they step back inside the main building, he lets out a soft sigh.

TIMOTHY: Much prefer the quiet in here...
CORSAIR: Likewise.

She rolls her arm, shaking off the cold.

TIMOTHY: Any reason you went up to the bar, then?
TIMOTHY: Irresistable urge to arm wrestle?
CORSAIR: Needed a drink if I was gonna survive in this place.
TIMOTHY: Can't say I blame you, and I've barely been conscious.

He takes the lead now, gesturing for her to follow.

TIMOTHY: ...they been weird to you at all?
CORSAIR: Weird enough.
TIMOTHY: Any danger?
CORSAIR: Not for me.
TIMOTHY: How about 5 rookies?
CORSAIR: Y' think someone Here is gonna attack you?
TIMOTHY: Can't exactly say I don't feel unwelcome, a bit...
CORSAIR: Don't think they're the type to actually get physical.
CORSAIR: But y'know you've got me if anythin' happens.
TIMOTHY: Thank you...
TIMOTHY: We'll see what the others say, too.

He can't say he'd missed the hunting trophies lining the walls, his tail tucked as nerves settle in. A brief attempt to speed up only makes him realize how sore his body is, forcing him to slow.

She props him up briefly with her arm.

CORSAIR: Careful now.

He nods, taking it without protest.

TIMOTHY: ...maybe going on a little adventure wasn't super ideal.
CORSAIR: Our conversation was that bad, huh?

She grins.

Tim snickers.

TIMOTHY: Oh no. If I hadn't had that conversation, I would have blacked out under the pool table or something.
TIMOTHY: Club environments are still an adjustment for me, and the bars we have back home are way different than here.
CORSAIR: That so?
TIMOTHY: Yeah, just...
TIMOTHY: ...getting the sense that back there's kind of an anomaly, the more we're outside of it.
TIMOTHY: It's- there's issues, but...
TIMOTHY: Back at Lauries, you could be just about anyone.
TIMOTHY: Not exactly getting the vibe here.
CORSAIR: ...huh.
TIMOTHY: Yeah?
CORSAIR: Glad y' got a place like that.
TIMOTHY: One I want to get back to, too.
TIMOTHY: ...just gotta settle this first-

He freezes, the sound of footsteps approaching as he reaches a junction.

A familiar looking walkie talkie steps by, sipping a mug of something.

COMMS: Having fun exploring?
TIMOTHY: I-!
COMMS: ...who's the snake?
CORSAIR: Corsair.

She tips the brim of her hat.

CORSAIR: An escort for th' new arrivals.
COMMS: ...huh.
COMMS: Yeah. Huh.
COMMS: Go on ahead, then. I'll let Mange know.

She nods, following Tim along.

Tim waits until they're out of earshot, approaching the infirmary door.

TIMOTHY: ...w...were you assigned to us or-?

The wooden snake smiles.

CORSAIR: Wouldn't worry about it.

Tim hesitates-

-and nods.

TIMOTHY: Let's take you in, then...

The door opens slowly, Tim peeking his head in.

SCOUT: Tim! You're back!
TIMOTHY: With, uh-
TIMOTHY: With somebody, too.

The door opens fully, revealing the wooden snake cowboy.

CORSAIR: Evenin'.

Scout and Cross freeze- Polka still not back.

CROSSBONE: ...who's-?
SCOUT: Hi!

She gives a slight wave to Scout as she steps in.

CORSAIR: Corsair.
CORSAIR: Been chattin' with Tim.

The snake scans the room, idly spinning her scepter on occasion as she passes by everyone.

CORSAIR: Been through th' wringer, huh?
CORSAIR: Still, survivin' a ragmirror's no small feat.
CROSSBONE: Y-yes, it-
CROSSBONE: We're very lucky to be alive.

She gives Tim a confused look, the dog making an indiscernible hand gesture.

CORSAIR: I'd say so.
CORSAIR: Glad y' made it out.

She spots the empty bed.

CORSAIR: Missin' someone?
CORSAIR: How many in yer group?

The snake looks to Tim, tongue flicking.

TIMOTHY: Five-
CROSSBONE: ...My girlfriend's missing.
CROSSBONE: She got up with Tim-
TIMOTHY: She's fine! She, um-
TIMOTHY: ...
TIMOTHY: Well-
TIMOTHY: I think she is-
CROSSBONE: TIM
TIMOTHY: SHE WAS FINE I JUST WANDERED OFF
CORSAIR: Sure she's alright.
CORSAIR: Y' trust her, right?
TIMOTHY: M-more than anything!
TIMOTHY: She's my best friend, and-

He shoots Cross a tired look.

TIMOTHY: Willow, you know I wouldn't leave her alone if I thought she couldn't handle it...
CROSSBONE: ...

The virtual pet sighs, a soft, droning beep.

CROSSBONE: I know.
CROSSBONE: Just...
CORSAIR: I can go check after this, if ya want.
CORSAIR: Don't have much else to do, anyway.
CORSAIR: ...Y' said there's-

As she steps to the end of the room, the snake's scepter suddenly pulls her arm in the direction of the window, pointing to Roulette's room.

She looks mildly surprised for an instant, but shakes it off quickly enough that Scout and Cross don't even seem to spot it.
The two only see her pointing the scepter at the window.

CORSAIR: ...five of ya?
CORSAIR: And the doctor's in there, too, from the sound of it.

Tim tries not to let his nerves creep up.

TIMOTHY: That's...Roulette.
TIMOTHY: It took the most damage in the fight.
TIMOTHY: ...and before.
SCOUT: Try not to disturb it, if you can...
CORSAIR: Not plannin' to.
CORSAIR: Just-

She practically has to pry the scepter away from the curtain-covered window; once more only noticed by Tim.

CORSAIR: ...curious.
CORSAIR: Good t' meet y'all, anyway.

The snake steps back over by Tim, leaning against the wall next to him.

SCOUT: It's good to meet you too!
SCOUT: What brought you to Tim's door, so to speak?
CORSAIR: He came t' me.
CORSAIR: Found me in the bar.

Scout makes a noise of mock-shock.

SCOUT: Tim! Drinking this late?
TIMOTHY: H-HEY
SCOUT: Relax, I know you're sober.

He winks, the beanie dog blushing.

SCOUT: Still, I can't say I'd expect you to have wandered there of all places.
TIMOTHY: I just wanted to check around, to be honest...
SCOUT: So...snooping!
TIMOTHY: ...yep.
CORSAIR: Definitely snooping.

She pats his shoulder.

He can't help but laugh, albeit shyly . His eyes widen as Scout gets out of bed, walking with a significant wobble towards the snake.

TIMOTHY: Care-!
SCOUT: I got it! I got it.

The yellow tinted bear gets close enough to get a good look at Corsair, peering all around her- and at her scepter.

SCOUT: Can't say I ever saw a cowboy before in person!
SCOUT: Always been a cool look to me!
SCOUT: But always dressup, where we're from.
SCOUT: Is this more of a cool costume situation, or are you committed to the life of a lone ranger?

Corsair stares.

Then, cracks up laughing.

CORSAIR: Hell of a question.
CORSAIR: I'll say I veer towards th' latter.
CORSAIR: ...More of a drifter, I'd say.
CORSAIR: Don't exactly see m'self keepin' the peace or maintanin' the law.
SCOUT: That's much better! Good!
SCOUT: You passed my test!
TIMOTHY: ...test?
SCOUT: We're not exactly the lawly types, Tim. Not here, anyway!
SCOUT: And god knows we're not going to get through this peacefully.
SCOUT: Not out of any wanting any trouble, though.

She tilts her head.

CORSAIR: You're expectin' it, though?
SCOUT: I haven't seen much of the place, but...
SCOUT: Just got a feeling about it.
SCOUT: Kinda exciting!
SCOUT: Not ideal, though.
CORSAIR: ...huh.
CORSAIR: Careful with that, Scout.

He freezes.

No one speaks.

She glances around.

CORSAIR: What, yer name?

You could have heard a pin drop.

She holds her scepter up.

CORSAIR: Like I told Tim,
CORSAIR: ...this thing ain't just for show.

The snake resumes her posture against the wall, as if nothing had happened.

CROSSBONE: H-
TIMOTHY: How much do you know.

Tim's voice comes out cold- a complete and utter tonal shift from earlier, one difficult to distinguish whether it was full of anger, fear, or both.

She looks under the brow of her hat, over at Tim.

CORSAIR: Easy there.
CORSAIR: The guard dog look doesn't really suit ya, Tim.

The snake stretches her back; her voice entirely calm as she settles back in her spot.

CORSAIR: Nothin' that'd be an issue.
CORSAIR: Not things' I exactly Asked t' know.
CORSAIR: Y' want a list?

Tim growls, a startlingly serious noise.

SCOUT: Tim-
TIMOTHY: I don't like it.
SCOUT: She-
SCOUT: You're concerned for-
SCOUT: ...us, right?
TIMOTHY: Mmrrgh.
SCOUT: Did she give you any inkling that she'd hurt us?
TIMOTHY: No, of course not, I-
TIMOTHY: I wouldn't have-
TIMOTHY: ...

He can't meet Scout's eyes.

SCOUT: ...it's okay, man.
SCOUT: You can let me talk with her about it.
TIMOTHY: ...fine.
SCOUT: Good! Thank you.

The bear turns to Corsair, hands on his hips.

SCOUT: Well! You offered!
SCOUT: The list, please!

She sighs a little.

CORSAIR: Doesn't all come t' me in one go, but... I'll say what I can.

The snake looks up at the ceiling, then moves her claw to point around the room.

CORSAIR: Crossbone.

She points out of the room.

CORSAIR: Your girlfriend, Polka Dot's, out talkin' to someone else at th' moment.
CORSAIR: She's safe, if y' were worried.

The snake then points at the bear.

CORSAIR: It's Scout right now, but there's Lickety, Devo, and Fatale too.

She pulls her claw back.

CORSAIR: That enough?
SCOUT: ...just names, then?
SCOUT: And...locations.
CORSAIR: There's more.
CORSAIR: Harder t' describe.
SCOUT: I'd like to hear!
CORSAIR: ...Like I said, harder t' describe.
CORSAIR: I pick up on things.
CORSAIR: Just get feelings here n' there.
CORSAIR: Can't really talk about most of 'em, and most aren't worth knowin', anyway.
CORSAIR: Some can be more private, too. Can't share those, either.

The bear leans in.

SCOUT: Can you tell me what *kind* of private?

She sighs and scratches her forehead.

CORSAIR: Y' get... One example.
CORSAIR: How's that?
SCOUT: Sure!

The snake adjusts her hat.

Then, turns to Tim.

CORSAIR: ...Been worried about Lickety, right?
TIMOTHY: L-?

Something clicks for both of them, both of them too worked up to pick up on it earlier.

SCOUT: HE-HEY-
SCOUT: He has a name?!
TIMOTHY: That's!
TIMOTHY: That's him, right?!

The dog's eyes light right up.

TIMOTHY: Is he okay?!

She gives a small shrug.

CORSAIR: Can't say.
CORSAIR: Considerin' y'all all almost died, I doubt it.
CORSAIR: Any of y'all okay right now?
TIMOTHY: N-no, but-!
TIMOTHY: ...you can't pick up on him?
TIMOTHY: Just...
TIMOTHY: ...anything...
CORSAIR: Settle.

She places a claw on his shoulder.

CORSAIR: I get what I get.

He nods, tensing and untensing.

TIMOTHY: ...thank you, at least, for-
TIMOTHY: I have something to call him now.
TIMOTHY: Thank you.

She nods, removing her claw.

CORSAIR: Good enough, Scout?
SCOUT: That works for me!
SCOUT: Very neat!
TIMOTHY: ...I'm...sorry for doubting you.
CROSSBONE: I'm not!

Cross makes a distorted beep.

CROSSBONE: I'm glad you've been good about this so far...but...
CROSSBONE: ...
CROSSBONE: Tim, you brought her here for a reason.
CROSSBONE: We're not- we're not just here to make friends, casually...
CROSSBONE: Corsair, you're here to help us, aren't you?
CORSAIR: 'Course.
CORSAIR: Why wouldn't I be?
CROSSBONE: Try again. Why do you want to help?
CROSSBONE: ...nothing's done without a reason.
CORSAIR: ...Y'all are pretty damn suspicious of me for doin' absolutely nothin' t'you.
CORSAIR: This town's priorities are screwed; doesn't mean everyone here's out t' get ya.
CORSAIR: I'm not even From here, for th' record.

She sighs.

CORSAIR: ...I got my own reasons.
CORSAIR: If that's not good enough, then you can call it off.
CORSAIR: But make up y'r mind.
CORSAIR: ...Tired of makin' excuses for myself when Tim asked me t' help.

Scout and Cross whip their heads around at Tim.

Tim sweats.

TIMOTHY: I, uh-

A deep breath.

TIMOTHY: ...she's right.
TIMOTHY: I saw her do some incredible stuff at the bar, and she's not from here.
TIMOTHY: We sat, we talked, she can help us. I'm sure of it.
TIMOTHY: I-
TIMOTHY: I'm sorry, Corsair. I panicked because-
TIMOTHY: We're very, very fucking scared of this guild. They already-

Scout gives him a nod.

TIMOTHY: ...they already commented on the bears being a possible issue, and they don't even know about the whole...multiple people thing.
TIMOTHY: They're important to me. Everyone here is, but-
TIMOTHY: When you just-
TIMOTHY: When you knew Scout's name-
TIMOTHY: ...I'm sorry.
TIMOTHY: I. Did not expect that.
CORSAIR: ...I get it. On both counts.
CORSAIR: Guild sucks. Fuck 'em. And with me-
CORSAIR: Truth be told, wasn't tryin' to drop that quite yet; the name.
CORSAIR: Slipped up.
CORSAIR: Didn't figure it'd go over well, n' looks like it didn't.

She taps her scepter.

CORSAIR: Well. What can ya do.
CORSAIR: Look...you two want help, too? Protection while you're here?

Cross looks away,  thinking it over.

Scout, however, gives an affirmative gesture.

SCOUT: I like your vibe! Sure!
SCOUT:  Though- is it just for me? Or do I get the bear bundle deal.
CORSAIR: Depends.
CORSAIR: The others want it?

He has to pause.

SCOUT: Well, if it's bear by bear...
SCOUT: I suppose we can make that work!
CORSAIR: Consider it done, then.
CORSAIR: Cross?
CROSSBONE: ...mm.
CROSSBONE: I...I'm also sorry.
CROSSBONE: If Tim asked you, then-
CROSSBONE: I trust him.
CROSSBONE: I'm okay with it, but- I'm probably the one getting into the most trouble, and I'm doing it on purpose.
CROSSBONE: I'd rather you protect the others as priority.
CORSAIR: I'll only show up if y' holler after me.
CORSAIR: If y' wanna get cursed, then, well...don't call me when it's happenin'.
CROSSBONE: ...easy enough.
CROSSBONE: And you'll, just- you'll hear it?
CORSAIR: I'll show up.
CORSAIR: If I can.
CORSAIR: ...doesn't gotta just be for fightin' either, though that's the kinda thing I've got th' most experience with.
SCOUT: Oh! Talents!
SCOUT: What's the best options?
CORSAIR: ...pardon?
SCOUT: What would be best to summon you for!
CORSAIR:  . . .
CORSAIR: ...Just use y'r best judgment.
SCOUT: I've been told I'm not great in that department!
TIMOTHY: Scout.
SCOUT: I'm kidding, I'm kidding.
SCOUT: ...but are nice, pleasant things on the table?

The snake reaches up, scratching her head.

CORSAIR: ...like what?
SCOUT: What if I find a very, very cool bug.

She snorts.

CORSAIR: Think y' can handle that yourself.
CORSAIR: I've got faith in ya.
SCOUT: Oh, no. I just want other people to see it.
CORSAIR: Not th' kinda thing ya call in assistance for, then, is it?

He leans in again.

SCOUT: What if they're the monster-y kind of bug.
CORSAIR: Play it by ear, then.
SCOUT: Hmmm, hm!
SCOUT: Easy enough.
SCOUT: And is there anything our party can do for You!
CORSAIR: Don't need nothin'.
CORSAIR: Keep yerselves outta trouble, much as y' can.
CROSSBONE: ..done deal, then.
CROSSBONE: For us, anywa-

The cowboy spins her scepter around,
pointing it backwards at the door.

It opens just a moment later.

You step in, your enormous pile of jiggling candy sandwiches difficult to balance.

POLKA DOT: Jeez, why'd it make 'em this big-
POLKA DOT: Sorry for the delay everybody, folks were chatty....

You spot a wooden snake in a cowboy hat over your sandwich pile.
She tips her hat at you.

CORSAIR: Evenin', Polka.

You freeze, just barely putting a wing up to steady the stack.

POLKA DOT: Who-?
CROSSBONE: ...Corsair.
CROSSBONE: Tim brought her over, says she can help.

You raise a brow at the dog, Tim groaning.

TIMOTHY: Can- can we please stop giving me that look.
POLKA DOT: She knows my name, dude.
TIMOTHY: Not! My fault!
SCOUT: He's right, Corsair's spooky!
CORSAIR: Spooky, huh...?

The snake flicks her tongue, not denying anything.

POLKA DOT: That...means a lot of things in a place like this.
POLKA DOT: This is literally the spooky place.
POLKA DOT: Explain.

She sighs, giving the scepter in her claw a twirl - the colorful, glowing crystal at the top catching your attention - before threading it through a loop at her side.

CORSAIR: First thing's first.

Corsair reaches over, hefting up the entire sandwich tray with one claw, before reaching the other out to shake.

You blink.

POLKA DOT: I, uh-

A glance to the side gets a nod from Cross.

You reach your wing out-

-and shake.

She shakes back.
Her handshake is firm, but not too hard.

You feel a little twinge of something, but you aren't sure what.

CORSAIR: Wouldn't use 'spooky' to describe myself.
CORSAIR: I know your name thanks to this.

She retrieves her scepter, holding it up near you.

CORSAIR: That's 'bout it.
POLKA DOT: ...magic, then.
POLKA DOT: Can't say I know too much about it...

You squint at the crystal, trying to get a good look.

Vibrant hues swirl within; mesmerizing to watch.
You find yourself leaning a little bit closer, finding yourself drawn towards it.

She nonchalantly switches the staff over to her other claw, moving it away from you.

CORSAIR: Careful, there.
CORSAIR: Told your buddy Tim: Not th' kinda thing y' wanna toy with.
POLKA DOT: ...and you've got the whole thing under control, then.
POLKA DOT: My group seems to think you're chill.
POLKA DOT: I'll go with that for now.

You sigh, holding your wing out for the stack.

POLKA DOT: Would have asked for one more if I knew we'd have another person joining us.

She hands it over, not responding to your first comment.

CORSAIR: Nothin' needed. I'm fine.

The snake leans back against the wall.

You start handing out meals, Cross tilting her head at the gummy snack.

CROSSBONE: Is it any g-
POLKA DOT: Don't bet on it.
POLKA DOT: The guy working the kitchen seems really nice, but...
TIMOTHY: Not in the right job?
POLKA DOT: Feels like it'd fit in better back home.
POLKA DOT: ...both of the people I met, really.

Scout takes his eagerly, his eyes lighting up as he gets a big pantomimed chomp in.

SCOUT: So there's friends here?
POLKA DOT: Pooootentially, yes.
POLKA DOT: At the very least, they're not raging bigots.
CROSSBONE: Great to know that's the bar we're clearing...
CORSAIR: Lucky t' find that here at all.
TIMOTHY: She's right, from what I can tell.
SCOUT: A few allies is better than none-

The door to Roulette's room opens slowly, Guthrie's plush head peeking out.

GUTHRIE: Okay, everyone....

She raises a paw to her mouth in a shushing motion as she shuts the door- quietly.

GUTHRIE: I have good news.

Scout's on his feet, nearly dropping his sandwich.

SCOUT: Is-?!
GUTHRIE: S-settle, settle!
GUTHRIE: The worst's over.
CROSSBONE: Roulette's going to be okay? After all that?
GUTHRIE: As long as it gets bedrest, yes.
GUTHRIE: It's stabilized for now.

You let out a long exhale through your squeaker, all of the air leaving your body.

POLKA DOT: That's a relief...
POLKA DOT: Had me scared out of my mind.
GUTHRIE: Just don't get too overeager.
GUTHRIE: If you want to visit, you have to be very, very quiet.
GUTHRIE: Knock on the door, ask in your tiiiniest voice.
GUTHRIE: Any big upsets could cause things to worsen-
SCOUT: So, wait-
SCOUT: Should we, like, not visit-
GUTHRIE: No no, you can!

She pinches her paw together.

GUTHRIE: Just use inside voices.

She finally notices the snake in the room, taken aback- especially when she sees the scepter.

GUTHRIE: Who are-

The snake doesn't look up at her.

CORSAIR: Corsair.
CORSAIR: Escort for th' new folks.

Guthrie's eyes widen.

GUTHRIE: Oh...Oh!
GUTHRIE: Yes, I- forgive me.

She clasps her blanket flaps together, looking embarrassed.

GUTHRIE: You just go on and tell me if you need anything.
CORSAIR: Will do, ma'am.
CORSAIR: All clear here.
GUTHRIE: That goes for all of you.
GUTHRIE: It's late, so I'd wager you all need a good night's sleep.

She waddles on over to the door, leaning in with a wide smile.

GUTHRIE: Don't let the bedbugs bite!

She closes the door, everyone glancing at each other.

TIMOTHY: Are there...actually-

Scout is already on the floor, trying to look under the beds.

CORSAIR: There's no bugs.

The snake stretches her neck, wood clacking.

CORSAIR: So.
CORSAIR: Am I stickin' around on guard duty, or are y'all good as y' are?
CORSAIR: There's a bed free if y' need me. Don't wanna impose, though.

You could probably ask some late night questions before turning in- but not too many.

POLKA: I suppose telling Vann about the city wouldn't hurt, so long as you're careful to leave out certain details.

Tim weighs the scepter in his hands, having to tear his eyes away from its shimmering colors...

I gotta give this back...
...especially seeing how stern that toy was with the crowd. Something's up there, and I don't wanna be on their bad side...

He takes a moment to steel his nerves before slowly walking over, shimmying as inconspiciously as possible.

Once near the snake, he clears his throat.
They hold out their hand expectantly, and he passes it over immediately.

TIMOTHY: G-good job out there.

They take the scepter and set it down on the bar, tapping it to stop it from rolling.

????: You wantin' to sit? Talk?
TIMOTHY: I mean-
TIMOTHY: Y-yeah!
TIMOTHY: If that's alright.
TIMOTHY: ...wasn't expecting to see a new person here. Another one, I mean.
????: Wasn't either.
????: How many in your group?
TIMOTHY: Five. Yours?
????: Just me.

They hold up the staff.

????: And my backup.

Tim peers over at the staff, eyes widening.

TIMOTHY: Is that...?
TIMOTHY: I mean, I thought it felt weir- I mean, interesting!
TIMOTHY: It's pretty incredible looking.

The snake peers over at him for the first time, toy tongue flicking.

????: Is it what?
TIMOTHY: Oh, uh-
TIMOTHY: Like...a person, I guess-
TIMOTHY: Sorry, just- the way you said that.
????: Never heard someone call their weapon their backup before?
TIMOTHY: Haven't exactly met a lot of adventurers.

They snort.

????: That what you are?
TIMOTHY: Not yet, I don't think.
TIMOTHY: Just...
TIMOTHY: A guy trying to help a friend.
????: Must be somethin' reaaaal specific to come Here of all places.
????: You religious?
????: ...Don't look the type.
????: Must be...somethin' Else then.
TIMOTHY: ...

I should be careful...

TIMOTHY: Not...religious, no.
TIMOTHY: It's definitely different from what I'm used to.

They take a swig of their drink,
then cock their head to the side.

Just enough to see Tim.

????: ...That...individual, runnin' around. You know the one.
????: If you're doin' what I think you're doin'...
????: ...Could get more than ya bargained for.

Tim glances away instinctively, before forcing himself to make eye contact.

TIMOTHY: ...there's two "individuals", from what I've heard.
TIMOTHY: Both of which would be a handful.
TIMOTHY: Which do you think I'm looking for?
????: Well.

The snake looks forward, taking a drink.
They crack their neck and roll their shoulders.

????: Way I see it-
????: If you're tryin' to get help for a friend, doubt you'd come all this way for a hired hand.
????: F'you made it this far, you wouldn't need one.
????: So.
????: Who's that leave?

They look back over at Tim.

TIMOTHY: W-
TIMOTHY: Hired hand?
TIMOTHY: Do you mean the swordsman?
TIMOTHY: I mean, you're right, it's the other one, but-
????: Should be careful, then.
????: ...And don't tell anyone else here unless you trust 'em.

He pales.

TIMOTHY: ...yeah.
TIMOTHY: I get the feeling people, are, uh-
TIMOTHY: Weird about that.
TIMOTHY: ...among other things.

They raise their glass slightly in affirmation.

????: Weird about plenty here.
TIMOTHY: Feels like it isn't hard to be.
TIMOTHY: Like-
TIMOTHY: I mean, I've only been here for a few hours.
TIMOTHY: But the vibes are just...
TIMOTHY: ....
TIMOTHY: I'm really worried about how my partner's going to be treated.
????: Need backup?

!!!!!!!!!

TIMOTHY: Thought you were on your own adventure.

His keeps his tone even, trying not to sound accusatory- or too excited.

????: Never said I was an 'adventurer.'
????: And it's a simple question.
????: You need it, or not?
TIMOTHY: We're both strangers.
TIMOTHY: And...
TIMOTHY: ...I can't pay you, or anything.

But...

TIMOTHY: ...but we got wiped, coming in here.
TIMOTHY: If you really mean that-
????: Could tell.
????: Ragmirror, I heard?
????: Lucky to be breathin'.
TIMOTHY: Wait-

He leans in, lowering his voice.

TIMOTHY: how did you know that
????: You think people 'round here don't talk?
????: It's a small town.
????: Ya pick up on things.
????: Other people might pick up on it, too.
????: Could get unwanted attention.
TIMOTHY: shit-

Why- why didn't I think of that?
Of fucking course everyone knows, we've been out for god knows how long, and it was huge! Loud! Terrifying!

????: Settle.
TIMOTHY: R-right!

He shakes his head.

TIMOTHY: ...s...sorry. Getting a grip.
TIMOTHY: ....
TIMOTHY: ...I probably look like a wreck right now, huh?
TIMOTHY: Why do you wanna help somebody who can't even pass a social interaction?

The snake squints.

????: 'Pass?'
????: Kid, you're fine.
????: Didn't even hear what I'm offerin' yet, anyway.
????: Ya need backup? Or not?
TIMOTHY: ...I'd have to ask the others.
TIMOTHY: Like-
TIMOTHY: Yes. Yes we do.
TIMOTHY: Really do.
TIMOTHY: But I don't know your name yet, and you don't know mine.
TIMOTHY: Or...anything else. And I think I'd like to get more of that before I commit to anything...
TIMOTHY: ....
TIMOTHY: I'm Tim.

The snake's claw raises towards him from their poncho,
ready to shake.

He extends his own paw, trying to keep his grip steady as he takes their hand and shakes.

CORSAIR: Corsair.
CORSAIR: Just Cors works, too.
CORSAIR: Y'know, 'of course'. Just like that.
CORSAIR: She, for the record.
CORSAIR: And you use 'he', I'm guessin'? Just got a feelin'.
TIMOTHY: Y-yeah!

His eyes light right up, tail wagging.

TIMOTHY: I do! Yeah!
CORSAIR: Thought so.
CORSAIR: ...Any kinda backup ya want in particular?
CORSAIR: Seems like you got some idea I don't know about.
TIMOTHY: Well...
TIMOTHY: ...do you...are you good at ranged fighting?
CORSAIR: Any kind of fightin'.
CORSAIR: In case ya get into a scrape while in town.
CORSAIR: Or, if the locals get a little too...Local. With ya.
CORSAIR: Just holler. I'll find ya.
TIMOTHY: ...you can hear that far?

The snake smiles.

CORSAIR: Far enough.
TIMOTHY: Well...I'll take your word for it.
TIMOTHY: ...I do want to introduce you to my friends, though.
TIMOTHY: After I get to know you myself.
CORSAIR: After, huh?
CORSAIR: What happened to me talkin' to your friends First?
TIMOTHY: I!

He fumbles with his hands, trying to gesture what he means and failing.

TIMOTHY: I gotta-
TIMOTHY: I gotta make sure you're cool-
TIMOTHY: And THEN take you to my friends-
TIMOTHY: A-and THEN we can work together!
TIMOTHY: It! Is a whole process!
CORSAIR: Mhm.
CORSAIR: Your tail's waggin', by the way.
TIMOTHY: I-IT DOES THAT
CORSAIR: Not many butch cowboys around, I'm guessin'?
CORSAIR: Maybe your first time around a cowboy in general.
CORSAIR: ...Really think I'm 'cool'?

She smiles and laughs.

CORSAIR: Don't gotta answer that.

S-she said-!!!!!!!

His tail only wags harder, eyes bright and excited.

TIMOTHY: S-so!

Shit! Okay, right, remember where we are-

He drops his voice down to a quiet whisper, cupping his muzzle and leaning in.

TIMOTHY: The uh, the butch thing.
TIMOTHY: I've heard that a lot where I'm from- it's this whole place-
TIMOTHY: ...but...
TIMOTHY: That means you're in trouble too, here.
CORSAIR: Kid.

She turns fully towards Tim on the barstool.
The snake twirls her scepter in one claw before pointing to her chest with it.

CORSAIR: I'm trouble.
CORSAIR: F'you think anyone in this town's got a chance against me; think again.
CORSAIR: Any of 'em try to start anythin', it's over already.

She laughs.

CORSAIR: Somethin' like that.
CORSAIR: ...'Pologies, I get tipsy quicker than I realize.
CORSAIR: Kind of a lightweight.
CORSAIR: Our secret, yeah?

Tim nods, a bit too eagerly.

...she's so cool...

TIMOTHY: I'm...glad, at least.
CORSAIR: That I'm a lightweight?
TIMOTHY: NO THAT YOURE TROUBLE I MEAN THAT YOURE STRONG I-

The snake can't help but snicker, patting his shoulder.

CORSAIR: So.
CORSAIR: Still need me to meet your friends?
CORSAIR: Or somethin' else on your mind?

POLKA DOT: Uh...I mean-
POLKA DOT: I have no clue what you've got in that kitchen.
POLKA DOT: Something...simple, comfortable, uh-
POLKA DOT: Portable?
POLKA DOT: Everybody else is stuck in bed, so, yknow- to go would be good.
GUTSY: Hmm...sandwiches, maybe?
GUTSY: I could make a biiiiig stack-

You nod, unable to keep from smiling at its enthusiasm.

POLKA DOT: That'd be great.
GUTSY: You got it, then!
GUTSY: Vann, you wanna keep her company while I whip these up?
VANN: O-oh!
VANN: I mean, I-
VANN: I was wiping down tables-
COMMS: S'fine.
COMMS: You can take fifteen.

Vann gives the walkie talkie a quick, grateful bow before turning to you.

VANN: O-okay, well-

Comms starts walking out, the cat looking even more nervous.

VANN: Um.
VANN: ....
VANN: You're, um.
VANN: ....travelers?
VANN: Adventurers?
VANN: I was, um- I showed up here from the Store, so-
VANN: I haven't exactly been outside...
